4 www.preston.ac.uk INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS PREPARING YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE Your college experience is designed to prepare you for your future, whether this is university, an apprenticeship or full-time employment. To help keep you on track you will have a Student Manager who will monitor your progress and support you to achieve your goals. All our courses are designed to prepare you for the world of work and university with industry placement opportunities and a range of on-campus activities such as guest speakers, careers events and workshops. Alongside achieving your qualification, you will also gain the technical skills, knowledge and experience that employers are looking for. Preston College has strong employer links and we have worked closely with them to shape the curriculum to ensure you have the right skills to help you achieve your career goals. DEVELOPING THE RIGHT TECHNICAL SKILLS On some of our courses, you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to gain a solid foundation of skills before you move onto a Level 3 qualification. On other courses, you may be able to begin at Level 3 depending on your qualifications. T-Levels and our Level 3 Extended Diploma programmes are the equivalent to A-Level study and can provide you with enough UCAS points to progress onto university. See page 17 for more information. FACILITIES & LEARNING At Preston College there is a wide range of learning facilities and resources which allow you to put the technical skills you learn into practice. Facilities include industry-standard studios, theatres, libraries, science labs, workshops, hair and beauty salons, PC suites, digital technology and software. MATHS & ENGLISH Maths and English skills are an important part of everyday life and employers are looking for people with these skills. That’s why it is a Government requirement that if you leave school without a grade 4 (or above) you will have to study it as part of your course at college. MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION When making the important decision about what to study at college, it’s worth taking the time to research what qualifications are needed for your future career. Some professions do require higher level qualifications, but university is not always the only way to get them. You can study Higher Level qualifications at Preston College in a range of subjects either in the classroom or in the workplace. Alternatively, you could gain your higher-level qualifications through a degree or higher apprenticeship. Our courses are developed alongside employers and are designed to give you flexibility and options for your education and journey to employment. For example, you could start your studies on a full-time college course and transfer onto an Apprenticeship to earn while you learn whilst still gaining the same qualification. In January 2023 Ofsted concluded that Preston College is ‘Good’ in all areas. The College also scored the top assessment of ‘Strong’ for its contribution to meeting Local Skills needs, making Preston College the first in Lancashire to achieve the highest skills judgement within Ofsted’s newly enhanced inspection framework. To be recognised for the work, dedication and commitment that our college team continues to demonstrate for the good of our community, our learners, and our partner employers, is extremely rewarding.” VICTORIOUS 4-AWARD WIN AT NODA AWARDS In February, our Visual Performing Art staff and learners attended the National Operatic and Dramatic Association North West Region 2 Awards Dinner at the Imperial Hotel Blackpool and won not one but four awards for: Best Staging of a Youth Musical, Best Youth Ensemble, Best Choreographer of a Youth Production and Best Concert / Review overall. Jane Tudor, Head of School for Visual Performing Arts and Digital says: “To be recognised enough to be shortlisted is a huge achievement, but to win four of the awards is incredible. Things like this don’t just happen by chance, but by the amount of work that goes into each performance, rehearsal and show. I am extremely proud of everyone involved.”

From the School of Service Industries, two Level 2 hairdressing learners, Amy Banks and Jasmine Youles, have made it through to the regional heats in the Hairdressing category, whilst from the School of Visual and Performing Arts there are semi-finalists in three categories: Creative Media Make-Up, IT Software Solutions for Business and IT Software Solutions for Business: Foundation Skills. Head of School for Visual Performing Arts and Digital, Jane Tudor added: “It is absolutely fantastic that our students have made it through to the semi-finals. This is a testament to their talent and hard work and our dedicated and passionate staff, who want nothing more than to see them succeed.” PRESTON COLLEGE TAKES WORLDSKILLS UK BY STORM DOUBLE WIN AT THE EDUCATE NORTH AWARDS! www.preston.ac.uk INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS 12 AT PRESTON COLLEGE T-Levels have been co-created with leading employers to ensure that young people develop the right skills, knowledge, and experience to be successful in their future careers. T-Levels are an alternative to A-Levels and Apprenticeships courses. They combine academic study in the classroom with an in-depth industry placement that lasts at least 45 days, so students get experience in the workplace and their future industry. T-Levels are equivalent to three A-Levels, in terms of UCAS points, and you can progress to higher levels of study with them (see the table on page 13). They can also be used to secure employment or a higher or degree apprenticeship. Unlike A-Levels you choose one T-Level to study. www.preston.ac.uk 14 ” “ TOM STUDYING T-Level in Engineering (Design & Development) INDUSTRY PLACEMENT EMPLOYER Air Filtration Solutions Limited Air Filtration Solutions (AFS) Limited approached Preston College looking for a student to undertake a T-Level industry placement with them. Industry placements of 315 hours are integral to T-Levels and allow students and employers to connect on longer term projects that would not be possible on standard work experience placements. To make sure that AFS found the right student the College invited AFS to challenge our learners with a design project. After a project briefing from AFS our learners got to work on developing their ideas and response to the brief. A few weeks later the students presented their work to AFS and after follow up discussions, Tom was chosen to undertake the placement. Since Tom started at AFS he’s gone from strength to strength and become a T-Level ambassador for the Department for Education. Tom says: My confidence has grown since I started my industry placement at AFS. I’m working on designs using CAD and learning how to use different machines like laser cutters and 3D printers. I have developed greater subject knowledge and I can transfer this from college to work and from work to college. The T-Level has benefited me so much, I get the in-depth knowledge and the experience in the workplace which means I’m going to have the edge over someone else who has studied a BTEC or A-Levels. www.preston.ac.uk 15 INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Preston College has been developing its learning resources and facilities to support the new T-Level programmes. Investment has included the purchase of new equipment in our hospital ward, new text books in the library, new kit in Professional Construction, and in Engineering we have recently purchase a plasma cutter, two lathes, a press brake (for bending and folding sheet metal), three pillar drills, bench vices and a PC suite. We have also recently been awarded a grant to refurbish the ground foor of our Visual and Performing Arts centre. The refurbishment will include new facilities, kit and equipment for the T-Levels in Media and Digital Production. In September 2023, for the first time, Preston College learners received their T-Level results. T-Levels in Science, Health and Professional Construction achieved an overall pass rate of 96%. These three T-Levels were the first to be offered by Preston College, and learners completing their second year have a range of destinations including further study at university or college, degree apprenticeships and employment ahead of them. In Professional Construction there was an outstanding cohort of learners who all celebrated their achievements together at the end of term. Assistant Head of School for Construction, Zac Wilkinson says: “This was our first group of learners studying the new T-Level in Professional Construction and we are thrilled with their achievements. One of our students, Lily, achieved amazing results in her End Point Assessment and was awarded one of the highest marks in the country. Oliver, Adyan and Raphaela are all going to university to study architecture and Harry, Zach and Aasam are progressing to an apprenticeship. Regardless of outcomes, don’t worry, at Preston College we have a range of Level 1 courses that can help you realise your career ambitions. Your Level 1 course will include your core subject and additional units to develop your skills including Maths, English, Personal Development, Employability Skills, and Working with Others. You will also have additional opportunities such as guest speakers, work experience and projects to enhance your learning experience.
