TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (CERTTESOL) - LEVEL 5

This course provides an internationally recognised initial qualification for teachers of English as a Foreign Language, validated by Trinity College, London. The course is intended for those with little or no teaching experience and provides a comprehensive practical introduction to teaching English.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The main course content is delivered and assessed through five units these are:

  • Unit 1: Teaching skills
  • Unit 2: Language awareness including grammar and phonology
  • Unit 3: Learner profile
  • Unit 4: Materials assignment
  • Unit 5: Unknown language

Successful trainees must demonstrate an awareness of the needs of other colleagues in the team, teaching and non-teaching, and the value of mutual support in the teaching, learning and training environment. They must also demonstrate an awareness of the need for professional development during and after the course, based on a constructive response to training input and feedback from tutors and peers.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through written assignments and examinations with practical assessments as part of the requirements to achieve the certificate.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

There are excellent employment prospects at home and abroad for teachers of English as a foreign language. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

This course provides a Level 5 qualification awarded by Trinity, London. This is equivalent to the CELTA qualification. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need to have GCSE English at grade 4 (formerly grade C) or above. Equivalents will be considered such as Functional Skills, English Level 2, Cambridge Advanced or an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. You also need to have a Level 3 qualification and are required to pass a pre-course grammar task. An interview prior to acceptance on the programme is also needed.
