Designed specifically for people who want to work with children and young people from ages 0-5, this Level 2 course is an ideal introduction to the early years sector. Through this unique programme, you will gain the skills and knowledge you need to progress to related Level 3 qualifications or employment.
At the start of the course you will based at Preston College developing your skills and knowledge in preparation for your placement in an external nursery/crèche facility. At the Crèche you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a practical way through interaction with real customers (parents, children and young people).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Units include: Healthy lifestyles for children; Physical care routines; Child development; Observation, assessment and planning; Supporting positive behaviour; Safeguarding and protection; The role of the early years practitioner; Meeting individual needs; Partnership working; and Supporting planning and transition to school.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You will be taught through a variety of projects and be actively involved in developing innovative sessions using new technology. The combination of classroom based learning, work experience and project-based assessments is designed to prepare you for employment. Some modules may be delivered online remotely.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Assessment will be on-going through a combination of projects, involving cross college teams, displays and group work. Assessments also includes workplace observations. If you study Maths and English assessment is through exams.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
Successful completion of this course allows you to either progress to the Level 3 in Childcare and Education course or apply for employment in a range of childcare settings working under supervision in roles such as: nursery practitioner, classroom assistant or pre-school practitioner.
The qualification is relevant to the following careers: Playwork, Early Years Care, Childcare, Children’s Service and Nursery Nursing.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
When you are based at the external facility you will need to be prepared to undertake a full working day from 8.30am - 4.30pm. During this course you must complete a total of 250 hours in a work place setting.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will need four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above including English Language and/or Maths. You also need a full DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. You will apply for your DBS check once you have started your course.
