A hard-working student from Thornton-Cleveleys has been rewarded for her achievement and commitment to study by winning a prestigious academic award.

Carol Warmisham collected the Tim Curtis and Partnership Award from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) recently after being nominated by Preston College.

After working as a legal executive for 20 years, Carol decided she was ready for a change of direction and embarked upon a foundation degree in Forensic Science.

The 44-year-old, who studied part-time on the course commented: "The learning support at Preston College was fantastic - when I first started the course I was worried that I might struggle balancing my work and studies, but the enthusiasm and encouragement of the teaching staff and my fellow pupils helped me to overcome my worries and achieve the qualifications I need to be able to do my dream job.

"Once I graduate, I'd like to embark upon a career as a customs officer or crime scene manager."

Carol has now progressed on to the BA (Hons) top-up degree course based at UCLan.

Carol was nominated for the award by Jenni Wallwork and Meg Robinson, her teachers at the college. Meg commented: "Carol has adapted to the educational environment exceptionally well. We are all extremely proud of her hard work and academic achievements to date."

The awards ceremony, now in its 23rd year, provides a lasting tribute to Tim Curtis, a former Deputy Director of the University who was instrumental in establishing UCLan's Partnership College Network and who believed in 'taking learning to the learners'.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Alan Roff said: "Tim Curtis initiated academic opportunities for thousands of students to reach their full potential. The awards are a fantastic occasion to celebrate the success of our partner college students while honouring the memory of a man whose academic legacy survives to this day."

UCLan's partnership network was the first to be established in the sector, enabling higher education study to be undertaken at further education colleges. Through the partnership with Preston College, students can study for a UCLan degree closer to home, at their local college, while utilising the facilities at both the college and the University.
