Preston triumphs at inaugural swimming gala

Swimming Champions PRESTON COLLEGE yesterday won the inaugural MWR Preston Swimming Gala, seeing off competition from Runshaw, Newman and Myerscough Colleges at West View Leisure Centre.

The gala was hosted by Preston City Council and was an opportunity for swimmers from each of the colleges to get involved in some competitive swimming.

Preston College's team (Mat Norris, Kristian Bibby, Justin Austin, Jenny Atkinson, Rebekah Radcliffe and Lucy Sumner) were placed first overall, taking top results in the Men's Medley and Freestyle relay and runner up spots in the women's competitions.

Emma Farrell, sports development officer at Preston College said: "This was the first year of the gala and it was a success, all the teams seemed to really enjoy the day and that is encouraging to know as we look to develop more minority sports at the college.

"All the teams were brilliant and there were some impressive swimmers on display. Hopefully our team can build on this win and take that forward to other competitions in the near future."

There was added joy for two members of the team, Kristian Bibby and Lucy Sumner, who this week found out they had also qualified for the English Schools Cross Country competition which takes place in March.
