PRESTON COLLEGE catering tutor Sandra Grice was celebrating this week after picking up a host of awards and medals at the prestigious Hotelympia event at the ExCel Centre in London.

Sandra, who teaches students on the catering programme at Preston College, entered several competitions for her work in sugarcraft and pastry in a culmination of seven months preparation and her work paid off as she wept the board with awards in all categories.

Entering the 'Decorative Exhibit', 'Bridal Bouquet' and 'Miniatures', Sandra faced a nervous wait as her exhibits were judged against entrants from around the world.

Sandra who has been entering competitions as a hobby for the last 8 years, said: "After making the finishing touches to my pieces ready for judging, all I could do was wait until the winners were decided."

The winners were announced at the end of the exhibition and Sandra was amazed to discover she had been awarded Gold Medals for each of her pieces and Best in Class for two of them, but the biggest surprises were yet to come.

"I had been up to collect my medals and awards for best in class when there was another announcement for Best in Category and I couldn't believe it when my name was read out.

"As I was getting my photograph taken with the Best in Category award, I heard my name called again - I had no idea what for.

"I went on stage and was given a framed certificate with the words Senior Grand Prix D'honneur' on. I couldn't believe it, being awarded 'Best in Show' is something I've always dreamed of and having seen so many amazing entries from the world's best hotels and restaurants, I never believed it could be me.

"I'm pleased to have achieved so much but have to thank the judges at Salon Culinaire, especially Brian Taylor for his words of wisdom and encouragement and also to my family, especially my husband Andrew and my three sons who have put up with me and supported me throughout."

Now, Sandra hopes to enter more competitions and add to her haul: "I will definitely keep entering competitions during the next few years and hopefully I'll bring home more awards."
