Introduction

 

If you want a career in the Dental industry then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Dental Nursing Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications, that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a Dental Nurse in the Dental industry. This Advanced Apprenticeship is about providing the essential link between dentist and patient. Dental nurses support dentists and the other people who look after our teeth – this could involve anything from sterilising instruments to reassuring a nervous patient through to booking appointments.

 

To undertake an Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing, you must be committed, have a keen interest in the dentistry and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

 

Programme Levels:

 

Advanced Apprenticeship – NVQ Level 3 in Oral Health Care (Dental Nursing)

 

You will also undertake Key Skills and a Technical Certificate alongside the NVQ whilst attending College on a day or evening release basis.

 

Programme Length

 

Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing – 18 months

 

Course Content

 

Selection of units from the Dental Nursing Apprenticeship:

 

  • Ensuring your own actions reduce the risk to health and safety
  • Reflect on and develop your practice
  • Provide basic life support
  • Prepare and maintain environments, instruments and equipment for clinical dental procedures
  • Offer information and support to individuals on the protection on their oral health
  • Contribute to the production of dental images
  • Provide chair-side support during the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery

 

Assessment

 

You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways:

 

  • Course Work
  • Exams (Keyskills)
  • Oral Questioning
  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Practical Demonstration/Assignment
  • Written Examination

 

Careers Progression

 

Once you have completed the Apprenticeship you will be equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications required for working within the dental industry opening a variety of employment opportunities. There are many opportunities for well-qualified dental nurses to progress within the dental sector in dental therapy, hygiene, oral health promotion or dental practice management. You could even move on to related healthcare roles in nursing or radiography.
