Introduction

 

If you want a career in Laboratory Operations then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications, that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a Laboratory Technician. Laboratory technicians support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations. They work across many industries and can be involved in activities ranging from developing new products and diagnosing diseases to measuring pollution levels.

 

To undertake an Apprenticeship in Laboratory Operations, you must be committed, have a keen interest in science, and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

 

Programme Levels:

 

Apprenticeship – NVQ Level 2 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

 

Advanced Apprenticeship – NVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

 

You will also undertake Key Skills and a Technical Certificate alongside the NVQ whilst attending college on a day release basis.

 

Programme Length

 

Apprenticeship in Laboratory Operations – 12-18 months

 

Advanced Apprenticeship in Laboratory Operations – 24 months

 

Course Content

 

Selection of units from the Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship:

 

  • Comply with statutory regulations & organisational safety requirements
  • Developing and Maintaining working relationships
  • Use laboratory information systems
  • Simple sampling
  • Calibrating equipment
  • Controlling stocks

 

Assessment

 

You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways:

 

  • Course Work
  • Exams
  • Oral Questioning
  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Practical Demonstration/Assignment
  • Practical Examination
  • Written Examination

 

Careers Progression

 

The Level Two Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to progress on to the Level Three Advanced Apprenticeship in Laboratory Operations. Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship could lead to further qualifications or Higher Education. Once qualified, you might find yourself working in a research laboratory, hospital laboratory, environmental science laboratory, or laboratory within an educational establishment.
