Introduction

 

Practical carpentry and joinery skills are in high demand. If you want a career in the Joinery trade then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Wood Occupations Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications, that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a joiner in the construction industry. Carpenters and joiners prepare and put into place most of the wooden parts of buildings - from floorboards and roof trusses to expertly-crafted windows and doors.

 

To undertake an Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations, you must be committed, have a keen interest in the trade and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

 

Programme Levels:

 

Apprenticeship - Diploma in Wood Occupations Level 2 (Site or Bench)

 

Advanced Apprenticeship – Diploma in Wood Occupations Level 3 (Site or Bench)

 

You will also undertake Key Skills and a Technical Certificate alongside the Diploma whilst attending college on a day release basis.

 

Programme Length

 

Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations – 24 months

 

Advanced Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations – 12 months

 

Course Content

 

Mandatory Units for the Wood Occupations Apprenticeship:

 

  • Conform to general workplace safety
  • Conform to efficient working practices
  • Move and handle resources

 

Bench: 2 optional units from the following:

  • Set up and use circular saw
  • Produce setting out details for routine products
  • Mark out for setting out details for routine products
  • Manufacture routine products

 

Site: 3 optional units from the following:

  • Install first fixing components
  • Install second fixing components
  • Erect structural carcassing components
  • Maintain non-structural carpentry work
  • Set up and use circular saw

 

Assessment

 

You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways:

 

  • Course Work
  • Exams
  • Oral Questioning
  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Practical Demonstration/Assignment
  • Practical Examination
  • Written Examination

 

Careers Progression

 

The Level Two Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to progress on to the Level Three Advanced Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations. Once you have completed the Apprenticeship, as a qualified joiner you will be equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications required for working within industry. There are also a range of career opportunities you could follow including site management, estimating and surveying as well as specialising in shop fitting or form work.
