2 APPLY NOW: WWW.PRESTON.AC.UK Full-time barber, Mike, is enjoying a highly successful barbering career thanks to the Level 2 Barbering Diploma at Preston College. Having previously undertaken a BA (Hons) Acting, before working as an actor for a number of years, a moment in the barber’s chair and a longing for a career change, led Mike to an enrolment event at Preston College in 2018. After speaking to tutor Julie, Mike left the event to consider his options but credits the information he received and a ‘Hollywood moment’ in the car park, as providing the catalyst he needed to turn around, walk back into the college and enrol. Joining the course for two days per week in September 2018, having never picked up a pair of scissors to cut hair in his life, Mike was quickly learning a variety of techniques and basic skills that would set him up for future success. Taught by experienced barber and tutor Julie, who Mike describes as a ‘phenomenal lady’, all learners on the course were encouraged to secure work experience, to supplement their in-class learning. Supported by Julie, Mike approached No.77, The Gentry Barbers in Leyland and was given the opportunity to work alongside highly experienced barbers for one day per week. Once secured, Julie arranged for this experience to become an official work placement, as a bolt-on to the Level 2 Diploma. As an adult learner, Mike juggled his course, work placement opportunity and other paid employment as a DJ to allow him to learn from experienced barbers whilst on placement, advancing and elevating his skills and putting taught theory and newly learnt knowledge into practice. Upon successful completion of his Level 2 Diploma and having impressed the team greatly, Mike secured a full-time position at The Gentry and now works as a self-employed barber with a busy and varied client list of his own. Using not only the practical skills he learnt at college to further his career, Mike has also brought new ideas and innovations to the barber’s shop, using business skills taught as part of the Level 2 programme. In agreement with his colleagues, and with a thorough understanding of his client base, Mike expanded the beard care offer at The Gentry, introducing three levels of package, including a one hour gold package – so popular the barbers recently undertook fifteen in one week! “As an adult, I was really quite apprehensive about returning to college but at no point did I ever feel out of place, not once. Preston College has a good thing going on, there is a real community feel and the course was structured in such a way that the more you put in, the more you got out, which I loved! As an adult learner, you are very much on your own journey. The ex-learners that were brought in to do demonstrations and speak to us about their journeys provided real inspiration and for me, it worked! “Completing the Level 2 Barbering course and progressing into industry has allowed me to do things I just couldn’t do before. I can afford to make plans and the standard of living I now have is amazing compared to before. I have been able to buy a property and I have welcomed a baby girl into the world. The course at Preston College and the opportunities it presented and opened up really have changed my life.” LEVEL 2 BARBERING DIPLOMA MEET MIKE

Keen to learn the basics, Sue has already gained knowledge in joinery, plastering and tiling, with a natural passion for joinery becoming evident. Crediting the course with demonstrating how to use a range of tools properly and how not to be afraid of them, the female only programme had particular appeal to Sue, as she felt that the class would all have similar goals and objectives. Hoping to use her newly learnt skills to convert her own garage, Sue already has plans to move onto either the Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery course or the Level 2 Multiskills course. Commenting, she said, “The course really is better than I expected. Having undertaken practical courses before I anticipated having to wait around for tutor support but this class has two members of teaching staff and as we all have the same goals, we all help each other out, which means I am progressing much quicker than I expected.” FEMALE CONSTRUCTION MULTISKILLS LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE MEET SUSAN

Having travelled globally as a body building competitor, Adrian was keen to undertake a classroom/gym based fitness programme rather than an online course and began to search for appropriate study. Realising that set levels of English were required, to ensure successful completion of the written parts of the fitness programme, Adrian decided to join the Entry 2 ESOL course at Preston College to develop his English abilities. He is hopeful that the course will provide a stepping stone onto a Personal Training programme and ultimately, his dream career. ESOL Working in the Construction trade as a general builder, James saw the demand for qualified plasterers growing and having seen plasterers at work regularly, he decided that it was a trade he would like to pursue. Researching his options, James discovered the Level 1 Plastering course at Preston College and upon discovering that it was an evening class, he decided to enrol, studying the qualification alongside his day job. Keen to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma upon successful completion of this course, James credits tutor Terry with bringing the subject to life through very practical, hands on teaching, all studied in purpose built plastering bays within the newly renovated Construction Skills Centre. PLASTERING LEVEL 1 ADRIAN JAMES Working in a Health and Safety capacity, but without any formal qualifications, Adriana joined the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in 2016, completing the course with achievement of merit. 25 APPLY NOW: WWW.PRESTON.AC.UK MOST EMPLOYABLE! After seeing a friend post photographs from an earlier female multiskills course on social media, Laura decided to look into the course in more detail and applied in February 2022. Having never undertaken any practical construction before, or been given the opportunity to do so, she felt that the course provided the chance to gain the life skills that she wished she already had. With plans to move to Australia in late 2022, as part of a working holiday, Laura feels that the basic skills she is learning in carpentry and joinery, plastering, plumbing and tiling, alongside the increased confidence in tool selection and use, will provide the first steps to potential employment opportunities overseas. FEMALE CONSTRUCTION MULTISKILLS LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE AAT ACCOUNTING I was quite apprehensive about starting the Level 2 AAT Accounting course as it had been 10 years since I completed my degree. I also wasn’t sure how I would cope with the exams due to anxiety. My tutor Kaye was, however, outstanding. She helped me to achieve so much more than I expected and I successfully passed the course with a distinction grade. I have since progressed onto the AAT Accounting Level 3 Advanced Diploma. I am hoping to start my own bookkeeping business later this year, using the skills and knowledge I have acquired during my time at Preston College. It just goes to show what you can accomplish with hard work and excellent teaching, even during a global pandemic! ENGLISH FUNCTIONAL Working as a Veterinary Nursing Assistant for almost eight years, Sue’s employer was keen to support her development by encouraging her to upskill and become a registered Veterinary Nurse. Applying for a Veterinary Nursing course at a local college, Sue was advised that she would need maths and English at grade 4 (previously a grade C) or above to enrol. Having achieved a grade D in English at school, Sue began searching for classroom based English courses and saw the Functional Skills qualifications offered at Preston College. After attending an assessment, Sue enrolled on the Level 1 Functional Skills course, where she achieved 100%. Progressing onto Level 2 and fast tracking to the assessment, Sue studied three key areas of English: understanding written text, written pieces and speaking. Upon successful completion of her Level 2 course, Sue successfully applied for the Veterinary Nurse qualification and began her studies in September 2022. Continuing to work for her current employer, Sue will study as a Veterinary Nurse Apprentice, allowing her to continue working in her current role with attendance at college just one day per week. Commenting on her time on the English programmes at Preston College she said: “My tutor, Tammara, was a great teacher, she did everything to support the whole class to successfully pass their qualifications. I really enjoyed the courses and regularly updated my employer with my learning as I found the skills I was developing invaluable for both my current role and future work, too.” SUSAN SKILLS LEVEL 2 & LEVEL 3 JENNIFER LAURA
