57 www.preston.ac.uk FOUNDATION LEARNING COURSES FOR LEARNERS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITY SUPPORT (SEND) Foundation Learning courses are available to learners with Educational Health Care Plans and learners with Special Educational Needs. These courses are crafted to incorporate communication, independence, and practical skills within engaging subject areas. The goal is to inspire and stimulate learners, enabling them to enhance their vocational, academic, employment, and social capabilities while maximising independence. While these courses typically span up to three years, their duration can differ as they are tailored to each individual's needs. LEARNERS CAN TAKE PART IN A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES INCLUDING: • Practical sessions • Classroom sessions • Educational trips and visits • Work related activities • Enrichment programmes AREAS OF STUDY AVAILABLE INCLUDE: • Introduction to Creative Arts & Wellbeing (Entry 2) • Art, Design & Media (Entry 3, Level 1 and Foundation Level 2) • Performing Arts (Entry 3, Level 1 and Foundation Level 2) • Construction - various trades available (Entry 3) PROGRESSION INTO THE WORKPLACE The Supported Internship is an academic year-long programme designed for young people aged 18-25 with an Education Health Care Plan, transitioning from education to paid employment. DFN Project SEARCH is a collaboration between Preston College, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary and Hft Lancashire to support people with learning disabilities to live with more independence. The goal for each intern is to gain paid employment of 16+ hours a week. To reach that goal, the programme provides real-life work experience placements within Lancashire County Council or Lancashire Constabulary. This is combined with onsite daily classroom sessions in employability and independent living skills, to help young people with learning disabilities and autism spectrum conditions make successful transitions to a productive adult life. Through completing a series of three targeted internships, each intern will acquire competitive, marketable and transferable skills to enable them to apply for a related post. They will also build communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills which is important to their overall development as a new worker.
