CUTTING AND FITTING - DRESS DESIGN

Duration: 9/10/11 Weeks
Last Updated: 31-05-23

This course has been designed to build on the sewing skills you already have but provides a new focus on creating the perfect cut and fit. Many experienced sewers find that despite being happy with their sewing and finish of a garment, the fit is disappointing. Every time a garment is sewn the same area does not fit properly. If this is your experience this is the perfect course for you.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course begins with figure analysis. Taking measurements and transferring them onto paper to make a basic block (template). This will be translated into a three-dimensional garment using calico to make a toile (mock up), which will be adjusted for an accurate fit. This process may take several attempts to perfect.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

A range of teaching methods will be employed, including group demonstrations, workroom and independent practice with additional one-to-one guidance from the tutor, if required. The sessions are informal, relaxed, friendly and designed to help you receive and share knowledge and ideas.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

There is no formal assessment as this is a leisure class. You will be guided throughout the course by the tutor.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

Prior to the course commencing you will be sent information about what you will need to bring along to your sessions. Sewing machines and overlockers are provided by the College.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

The course provides you with the skills and techniques for progression onto a more advanced dressmaking/textiles/design programme. It helps you in planning and executing personal projects and also helps to build confidence when tackling sewing projects.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will be informed of everything you need to purchase or bring in the first session.  Sewing machines and overlockers are provided by the college. You will already be familiar with operating a sewing machine.

There are no formal entry requirements. However, you must have basic dressmaking and sewing skills.
