Learn the creative art of cutting women’s hair at Preston College. This Level 2 course has no entry requirements making it ideal for those who want to develop their skills in hairdressing, whether this is to start a new career or as a refresher course for those who have been out of the salon for a while.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
On this course there is a perfect mix of theory and practical work so you develop the knowledge and skills required to creatively cut women’s hair. There are three key modules:
Client Consultation
Understanding your customer’s needs is essential and it all starts with consultation. You need to be able to confidently consult your client and identify any factors that might impact your end result. In this module you will cover:
Effective consultation techniques and professional communication.
Identifying your client’s hair characteristics.
Understanding influencing factors such as scalp conditions and hair defects and how to approach these conditions.
Cutting Women’s Hair
During this module you will develop your practical skills in a real salon environment working on real clients, here’s what you will cover:
How to select and use the appropriate cutting equipment or guidelines to achieve the desired look.
Develop cutting techniques for identified factors such as density, growth patterns, textures and elasticity.
Create one length, uniform layers, short and long graduations.
Develop cutting techniques such as club, free-hand, thinning, texturizing and scissor-over-comb
How to maintain your cutting tools and equipment.
Health & Safety in the Salon
In a salon there is an array of products which can be hazardous to your health, so it is important for you to develop your knowledge in this area ensuring a safe environment for you and your clients. In this module you will cover:
Safely preparing your work area.
Safe and hygienic work practices.
Personal protective equipment.
Controlling hazardous substances.
Safe disposal of waste.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You will be taught by our industry experienced tutors who will support you throughout your studies. Theory lessons will be taught in classrooms with the use of technology such as computers or tablets to prepare you for your online exams. Your practical sessions will be based in the onsite salon, Elements, which is fully equipped with chairs, mirrors, hairdryers and straighteners.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
On this course you will be asked to complete assignments and create a portfolio of evidence to confirm your knowledge and understanding alongside the skills you have developed. There are three online exams (one for each module). You will be observed by your tutors when completing practical assessments.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
You can choose to continue in your studies or seek employment in a salon. You could choose to top-up your certificate to a Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma (you will be exempt from some of the theory units). You could also study for a Level 2 Diploma in Barbering. Employment opportunities in salons including junior stylist roles or an apprenticeship.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
You will need to provide your own models for practice and your assessments. You will be formally observed on eight assessed haircuts with models (age 16+). You will need to purchase a hairdressing kit, bursaries are available and subject to eligibility.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
No prior experience within the sector is required, but you must have a keen interest in Hairdressing. In order to complete the assessments and theory work you should have an English GCSE Grade 4 (C) or Level 2 Functional Skills is recommended. If you do not hold/or are unable to provide your qualification, you will be required to undertake an English assessment to determine your written and verbal level of English.
