The sewing skills course will allow you to learn how to follow and interpret a commercial pattern and how to construct a sewing project from start to finish. If you have tried sewing at home or are a complete novice, this is the course for you. A commercial pattern will be chosen by the tutor and given to you before the first class. Materials and equipment will also be discussed and explained during your first class.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

During this course you will explore a wide range of processes needed to create a garment from start to finish. These include: interpreting written pattern instructions, laying and cutting fabric, marking fabric, tacking and fitting, setting up and operating a domestic sewing machine and overlocker, pressing and finishing.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught using a range of methods, including group demonstrations classroom practice and independent practice. One-to-one guidance by the tutor will also be available, if required. The sessions are informal, friendly and relaxed, designed to help you share knowledge and ideas.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed on an informal basis throughout the course. There are no exams.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

You will need to purchase a pre-arranged pattern and also bring a sewing kit to sessions. This information will be shared with you during your first class. Sewing machines and overlockers are provided by the college.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This course provides you with the skills to progress on to a more advanced sewing/textiles/design course. It is a step towards joining the college ‘Cutting & Fitting’ class if you want to develop your skills further. It will help you to gain confidence in planning and executing sewing projects of your own.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
