Essential Office Skills, is a level 1 qualification designed to develop the skills required to work within an office environment. You will learn essential skills to boost your confidence in the workplace, as well as tips and techniques to use when applying for roles - improving your employability and career prospects. This course is ideal for you if you already work within an office environment and want to enhance your administrative skills, if you are looking for an office-based role after a break from employment, or if you are looking to follow a new career path.

Studied on a weekly basis, every Thursday starting at 9.30am and finishing at 3.30pm (6 hours per day) for 10 weeks. 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of this Essential Office Skills course, you will gain four qualifications focussing on employability skills, business administration, customer service and essential digital skills.

Employability Skills – Level 1 Award

This module will allow you to develop your employability skills required to get work ready, and prepare to succeed both personally and professionally, to get the job you deserve! You will learn how to:  

  • Understand how mindset can improve employability  
  • Create a CV by identifying the type of information required and ensuring all information is accurate and up to date
  • Develop interview skills and techniques such as identifying and preparing potential interview questions, appropriate dress and language, speaking and listening skills and requesting feedback

Business Administration – Level 1 Award

This qualification explores key skills required to start a career in office administration. You’ll learn the essentials of keeping an office running including:

  • Handling phone calls and mail such as making and receiving calls
  • Receiving visitors in a business environment
  • Managing diary systems

Customer Service – Level 1 Award

As part of the customer service qualification, you will gain an introduction to customer service and how to take your existing skills to the next level – no matter what industry you want to work in! You will learn:

  • The principles of customer service
  • How to deliver good customer service
  • The different customer service communication methods
  • How to provide good customer service in line with organisational procedures
  • How to effectively deal with customer queries, problems and complaints

Essential Digital Skills – Entry Level

During this final qualification, you will learn how to confidently use a range of devices to undertake a variety of activities, including:

  • Using devices and handling information
  • Creating and editing
  • Communicating
  • Transacting
  • Being safe and responsible online

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught in a classroom setting at Preston College.

You will study in small groups to share experiences and examples of good practice. You’ll also get the opportunity to reflect with your class peers, what has worked well, what hasn’t and develop a valuable insight how to successfully secure employment within an office environment.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed via the submission of workbooks, project assignments and simulated classroom activities four assignments and portfolio work.

Each of the four qualifications must be successfully passed for the Level 1 Award to be achieved.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Dependant on your individual aspirations and circumstances, after the successful completion of this course, you may be able to progress on to study one of our many other adult courses on offer. For more information, you can talk to one of the college’s specialist advisors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

As a minimum we would expect all applicants to have entry level English to be able to complete the assignments required for this course and to gain the course qualification.
