LEVEL 3 HEAVY VEHICLE SERVICE & MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

A Heavy Vehicle (HV) technician services, inspects and repairs HVs, categorised by the Department of Transport as category N2 or N3, and associated trailers, with the associated ancillaries. They work in either a dealership that focusses on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage, franchise or large fleet operator that deals with many different makes of vehicles. They work on all the systems found within the vehicle. The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. Today’s technician must have strong problem-solving skills and a good grasp of the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicles systems and associated ancillaries.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will develop your knowledge, skills and competencies in a range of areas, including:

  • Associated fundamentals / characteristics of HV and their configurations and applications
  • Sufficient Health & Safety knowledge and environmental awareness 
  • Operators “O” Licence requirements relating to HVs
  • Customer expectations and implications of work carried out
  • Using a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HVs
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed in the workplace with a Preston's College work based tutor and undertake an end point assessment including:

  • Multiple choice examinations
  • Practical Task observations
  • Professional discussion and review of behaviours

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of the standard the Engineering Technician will be eligible to apply for registration as an Engineering Technician with a relevant professional body. Once qualified, you can continue to work in the industry, developing your practical skills and knowledge. There is also a range of career opportunities you could follow such as high-tech diagnostic specialist, workshop or dealership management or even opening your own business. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

There will be continuing support outside of the classroom environment through MyCourse and eLearning software. For workshop activities you will need to purchase suitable overalls and work boots. For your projects you will need pens and paper.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All Apprenticeships require an initial assessment, interview and employment in the industry. To progress onto Level 3, you will need a Level 2 qualification and Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above.
