The Level 3 Sports Massage qualification is aimed at those seeking to develop the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist, either employed or self-employed, working in a pre, post, intra and maintenance context, with non-pathological tissue. 

The course covers a variety of modules, including sports massage treatments, professional practice and anatomy and physiology.

The Level 3 is a pre-requiste to progression onto the Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy Certificate, if successfully completed.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This qualification aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to practice as a safe and efficient Sports Massage Therapist, with additional support for the course being provided by the awarding body Active IQ.

During the course, you will study a selection of modules, including:

  • Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • Principles of health and fitness
  • Understanding the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Professional practice in sports massage
  • Sports massage treatments

Each module will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in industry, with skills advanced in:

  • The clinical procedures for client assessment and treatment planning
  • How to conduct objective physical assessments
  • Sports massage techniques
  • Pre and post event massage
  • Maintenance massage

The course offers a good split in delivery of practical and theory, with 60% of your time being spent in practical sessions.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a learner on this course, you will have access to industry standard teaching facilities, consisting of large, open plan teaching areas, with separate spaces for theory and practical learning. Practical areas provide hand washing facilities, privacy curtains and privacy blinds to allow all learners to perfect higher level skills and develop expected industry performance.

When undertaking practical work, you will have access to massage beds, bolsters, towels, bed roll, massage oils and creams.

This is a Level 3 programme; a pre-requisite for progression onto the Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy course.
 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course offers a good split in delivery of practical and theory, with 60% of your time being spent in practical sessions.

To successfully achieve the qualification all assessments must be passed. Assessments on this course include five worksheets, one written assignment, three practical observations and a multiple choice theory paper for the anatomy and physiology module, where a pass mark of at least 70% is required.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion of this qualification allows you to either gain employment or set up your own business as you can also obtain insurance to work as a sports massage therapist in a pre, post, intra and maintenance context, dealing with non-pathological tissue. After completing this course you may be able to progress onto the Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage at Preston's College.

No specific kit or uniform is required but you are expected to dress appropriately for practical sessions. During practical sessions, jeans or skirts, long sleeved tops or healed and open toe shoes are prohibited, with learners being advised to wear trainers and active wear.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An appropriate level of fitness to carry out a sports massage and an interest in fitness and/or sport is required. You must also attend an interview.
