The HND Mechatronics Engineering programme has been designed to build upon the knowledge and skills gained through previous study on the respective HNC.

The course comprises of five modules, exploring appropriate theoretical and practical methods in mechatronics and their application to technical and commercial management processes.

The programme aims to provide the skills and knowledge needed to manage the improvement and control of quality in systems and products, whilst developing your overall career and employability skills.

Taught within our state-of the-art iSTEM Centre, offering outstanding teaching facilities, design suites, CAD/CAM software and a 3D printing lab, the programme has been designed with employers in mind, with successful completion providing opportunities to progress onto level 6 of the BEng (Hons) at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Throughout your time on the HND you will study 120 credits at level 5, comprising of five modules:

  • Computer Aided Design and Simulation
  • Engineering Design and Manufacture
  • Thermo-Fluids
  • Electronic Systems
  • Instrumentation and Control

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught using a range of teaching and learning methods, including traditional lectures, tutorials, group work and tutorials. You can also expect to undertake practical sessions as you work both individually and collaboratively with your peers as part of group project work. Teaching methods will vary from module to module, best reflecting the content of the module being studied.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

A variety of assessment methods are employed throughout the HND, including examinations, quizzes, presentations, posters and written reports.

Assessment methods, as with teaching and learning techniques, will vary from module to module.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Upon successful completion of this HND you may choose to progress onto the BEng (Hons) at University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Preston College operates a flexible admissions policy, welcoming applicants with a wide range of qualifications and/or experience, with each application assessed on its own merit. We also recognise prior learning/attainment (RPL) and experience, meaning it may be possible to map some of your existing qualifications against the modules for the HND Mechatronics Engineering qualification.

If this applies to you, we will discuss this with you at the interview stage.

For students who have recently been in education, we would expect an applicant to have one of the following:

Level 4 qualification:

A Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject, such as HNC Mechatronics Engineering.

The HNC shown on this website allows for direct progression onto this HND. Applicants with an alternate HNC may be considered, depending on modules completed.

Other qualifications or requirements: An NVQ diploma or equivalent competence based qualification.
Applicants with industrial experience will be considered on a case by case basis for the course.

IELTS 6.0 (with 5.5 in each skills area)
Plus  
GCSE: English and Maths GCSE grade 4 (formerly grade C) or equivalent.

We usually consider an A-level in General Studies as a supplementary qualification.

Contextual admissions will be applied to recruit students to the programme who do not meet the standard entry criteria.  This will be subject to interview with a course tutor to discuss individual circumstances.


International students:

You may need to apply for a Tier 4 visa in order to enter and study in the UK. However, please note that Preston College does not hold a Tier 4 Sponsor Licence to support student visa applications.
