This apprenticeship is for anyone who has a keen interest in digital design, architecture and professional construction. BRAND NEW for September 2021, the Digital Engineering Technician apprenticeship will teach apprentices to produce detailed solutions to achieve the optimum performance of built environment projects via digital models and presentations using software, sketches and electronic visualisations. The apprentices will typically support Digital Engineers or other functional specialists in completing complex tasks using digital engineering techniques,specifically:

  • virtualisation and simulation of design, construction and management of assets
  • digital measurement of design, production and management of assets
  • communication of complex engineering principles to stakeholders digitally
  • integration of construction data and information throughout the whole life cycle of the asset
  • adherence to the standards and regulation of digital information

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This apprenticeship is supported by six Professional Institutions who endorse the core competence as meeting the Technician or Associate level requirements across disciplines i.e. Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management and Engineering Technology. 

During the apprenticeship you will typically learn how engineering principles, codes and standards work in the built environment and the purpose of them. Understand various management principles and the project management lifecycle – specifications, methods and materials. You will also learn  and become aware of principles of the commercial procedures and reporting on all stages of construction project and an appreciation of commercial risk. You will also become aware of financial and legal obligations and constraints for all stakeholders in construction projects.

In addition this level 3 apprenticeship will help you understand quantification and costing within a digital environment, understand how proposals for design briefs, recommendations, programmes and detailed designs are prepared, become aware of the purpose of the digital environment and its role in design management and undertand the different disciplines and their role in coordination of design.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be predominantly trained in the workplace by your employer and have a specified day release to college to undertake off-the-job tasks and technical, practical learning.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Progression from the Level 3 Apprenticeship could lead to Construction Design Manager, Construction Quantity Surveyor, Construction  Site Manager, and Civil Engineering Site Manager. This apprenticeship has been designed to deliver sufficient competence, underpinning knowledge and understanding in the identified job role to allow apprentices to meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) or other industry affiliated schemes.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The following qualifications must be completed successfully prior to the end of the apprenticeship and as a pre-requisite for the individual attending the EPA:

• Level 3 BTEC Diploma Construction and the Built Environment NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Built Environment Design.

• English Level 2 and Maths Level 2.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An apprenticeship at level 3 requires you to complete, or be working towards a level 2 in Functional Skills for Maths and English. Depending on your prior attainment level, you may be required to complete an initial assessment to check suitability for entry onto the programme. If you have already achieved GCSE grades at C/4 or above, you may be exempt from completing this as part of the apprenticeship Additionally, it is expected that you will have already achieved the relevant level 2 industry related qualification in order to progress on to the level 3, and be working in a suitable role in order to complete this apprenticeship. Furthermore, all candidates will have an interview with the Apprenticeship Specialist to assess suitably before being accepted on to an apprenticeship programme.
