DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS

Duration: 9 Weeks
Last Updated: 11-04-24

Drawing is an enjoyable pastime that actively engages you with the present moment. It helps you to relax, improves creativity, and is an effective form of communication. Whether you're a complete novice or looking to refine your techniques, this course will guide you through the basics of drawing.

On this informal and relaxed course you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of drawing and seeing as an artist. You'll learn a range of techniques to develop your drawing skills that have a wide range of creative outcomes.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

During the course, each session will focus on a different element of drawing, providing a wide range of techniques to raise confidence and enhance visual awareness. Through various drawing approaches you will learn to explore and understand line, tone, measurement, texture and composition. You will also be introduced to colour and mark-making through experimentation with different drawing materials and techniques.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by a specially trained art tutor in one of our on-site art rooms. You will be taught techniques as a group with one-to-one tuition when required.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

There is no formal assessment required for this course but your progress and understanding will be monitored by our experienced tutor who will offer advice, and answer any questions posed throughout the session. This will all be carried out in an informal and relaxed manner, creating a fun environment designed to encourage learning.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Preston College offer a wide range of creative craft short courses, from sewing skills to cake baking. Upon successful completion of the Drawing for Beginners course, you may choose to progress onto another programme.

You can use the techniques you have learnt to create your own artwork. You may also wish to develop you painting skills by studying our watercolours and painting class. The tutor will discuss your options with you at the end of your course.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The class is very calm and relaxed but you will need to bring your own art supplies. This can be a very basic kit, consisting of a tin of pencils and an eraser. A wide use of materials is, however, encouraged, to help build confidence in creativity. Those wishing to work with paints, charcoal, or other materials are welcome to do so.

We suggest purchasing the following items:

  • A selection of pencils, i.e., B, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • A pencil sharpener and a rubber.
  • A sketchbook with good quality paper, i.e., 160gsm
