Our course will help you develop a broad range of skills to prepare you for an Apprenticeship. There is a combination of practical and theoretical elements covering essential knowledge such as health and safety and skills development focusing on the various tools and techniques for electrical installation. Preston College has strong links with the building industry, and we regularly recruit apprentices directly from the workshop.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Health & Safety
  • Introduction to Construction
  • Attach flex to common apparatus
  • Assemble 13amp switched sockets
  • Construct PVC wiring system
  • Cut, bend, join and thread conduit
  • Install one way lighting
  • Install two lighting

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The majority of the programme is dedicated to practical activities, however, there is also classroom based work on health and safety, building methods and construction technology.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

There are opportunities to demonstrate your skills and abilities through SkillBuild and other related competitions. You will need your own personal protective equipment including safety boots (you must have these on your first day) and work wear clothing. Although all other tools and equipment are provided, you will need to purchase stationery items for use in the classroom such as folders, pens and rulers.

Apprenticeship Progression

A lot of students are recruited by employers straight from the classroom to a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship during or at the end of their Level 1 course.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On successful completion of Level 1 you can progress to Level 2 or seek employment as an Apprentice to complete your training. At Preston College a lot of our learners are recruited by employers from our Level 1 course into an Apprenticeship.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will be required to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment and basic stationery for use in the classroom.

Additional Opportunities

Learners with a grade 4 in English and maths will also study an employability skills qualification.

Learners with a grade 4 in English or maths will study additional units in employability without gaining the full employability qualification.

Learners without a grade 4 in English or maths will study both subjects as part of their Study Programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You’ll need a profile of mainly grade 2 (Es) at GCSE including English Language and maths. You must also show an interest in the subject.
