Delivered by highly qualified tutors with extensive industry knowledge, our hairdressing courses at Preston’s College are a cut above the rest. You can gain the skills you need using industry standard products and facilities that you would expect to find in any high street salon. In addition to gaining advanced skills in hair care, colouring and cutting, you will also have the opportunity to work on community based projects which will enhance your customer service and communication skills.

As a Level 3 learner you have the opportunity to operate a commercial salon service in Elements our campus hair and beauty salon. 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Core Units: Consultation; Advanced colouring; Restyle women’s hair; Style and dress; Advanced cutting techniques; and Promote and sell products and services.

Optional Units: Creative design skills; Colour correction; Bridal hairstyling; Hair extensions; Marketing in the hair and beauty sector; The hair and beauty sector; and Salon design.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

There will be a mixture of classroom theory and practical sessions. Some modules will be delivered online remotely. 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The Technical Diploma is assessed with external exams and a synoptic practical exam at the end of the year. Assessment also includes:

  • Practical Assessments & Tasks
  • Written & Online Tests
  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Assignments
  • Oral Questioning

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion of this course can provide access to a range of opportunities at a higher level of study and employment in the hairdressing industry. You may also consider expanding your skill base by studying Level 2 Barbering or Beauty Therapy. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will be expected to provide some of your own clients for assessments and complete tasks to commercial time scales. Opportunities exist for entry into national competitions, gaining specialist professional certificates and visiting trade shows and exhibitions. You will need a uniform and a hairdressing kit (approximately £150). Extensive work experience is part of the programme, you will be supported by the Careers team.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing and good people, communication and dexterity skills as well as the desire to work with the general public in a professional manner. You will also need to complete a skills assessment and have a progression interview.
