Health and Social Care is a fast growing sector for jobs within both the local and national economy in a range of settings such as hospital, clinics, doctors surgeries, private care homes, dental practices and pharmacies. The demand for workers in this area continues to grow to meet the needs of the population and at Preston College we'll prepare you for the wide range of opportunities you will find in this sector.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Units of study include: Safeguarding; Human Growth and Development; Equality, Diversity & Rights; Communication; Anatomy; Dementia; and Working in Health & Social Care.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by our professional teachers who are experts in their area and have worked with a range of client groups (elderly, young people, special educational needs) in a variety of roles including; Residential Social Workers, Nurses, Carers, Managers, Support Workers and Safeguarding Officers. To ensure teachers' knowledge stays current and relevant all our staff regularly complete professional development. Recent training has covered topics such as domestic violence, cancer awareness, young people and mental health and safeguarding.

Our teaching facilities are located in the iSTEM Centre which includes a flexible space for a simulated learning hospital ward; a functioning dental suite, science labs and classrooms complete with IT equipment.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a variety of project based methods including posters, portfolios, case studies, video, class activities, discussion and presentation. You must also succesfully complete 50 hours of work placement.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

Work experience is a key part of your learning and you will be supported throughout so you develop your skills and knowledge in your chosen area.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

You can progress to either the Level 3 course, or on to University. Progression after Level 3 includes a variety of careers in the sector with Preston's College alumni working in fields such as nursing; midwifery; social work; pharmacy; radiography; speech therapy; physiotherapy; podiatry; and operating department practitioner.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above including English Language and/or Maths. You will also need DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance for your work experience placement.
