PAINTING & DECORATING - LEVEL 1

Duration: 1 year
Level: Level 1
Last Updated: 20-03-24

For a career in painting and decorating you’ll need a lot of hands on experience. That’s why our courses are mainly practical and held in our purpose built painting and decorating workshops including rooms with ceilings, walls, chimney breasts, window reveals, skirting and door casings. On this Level 1 course you will learn the importance of safe working practices, effectively communicating with others and how to apply a variety of materials used in the painting and decorating trade.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Health and safety
  • Introduction to construction
  • Painting technique
  • Painting and wallpapering
  • Applying decorative effects
  • Paper angles and painting skirting
  • Painting a door panel
  • Cutting and fixing decorative panels

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught in the Construction Centre with practical areas for a range of painting and decorating activities. You will also be taught the underpinning knowledge in the classroom.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

  • Portfolio of evidence
  • In class tests
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Multiple choice tests

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On successful completion of Level 1 you can progress to Level 2 or seek employment as an Apprentice to complete your training. At Preston College a lot of our learners are recruited by employers from our Level 1 course into an Apprenticeship.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will need white overalls and boots for the workshop sessions and you will need a pen, paper and a folder for your classroom work. All the tools that are needed for the course are provided, however it would be a good idea to get a basic tool kit so that you could do practical work outside college. This would cost approximately £50.

There are opportunities to demonstrate your skills and abilities through SkillBuild and other related competitions. You'll need your own stationery and personal protective equipment including safety boots and work clothing. All other tools and equipment are provided.

Additional Opportunities

Learners with a grade 4 in English and maths will also study an employability skills qualification.

Learners with a grade 4 in English or maths will study additional units in employability without gaining the full employability qualification.

Learners without a grade 4 in English or maths will study both subjects as part of their Study Programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will require a profile of mainly grade 2s (Es) at GCSE including English Language and maths.
