Our sports courses are ideal for those hoping to pursue further study or employment in the sports and fitness industry. You will cover various elements of sports coaching, massage and injuries, anatomy and physiology, fitness, sports development, leadership, psychology and talent identification. You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate your coaching skills by planning and delivering a sports session at a local primary school.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Science: Nutrition; Anatomy & Physiology; and Psychology.
Fitness: Physiology of fitness; Fitness Testing; and Fitness Training.
Leadership: Sports Coaching; Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport; Assessing Risk in Sport; and Instructing Physical Activity.
Therapy: Sport & Exercise Massage; Sports Injuries; and Nutrition.
Sports Development: Practical Sport; Sport Development; Sports Events; and Current Issues in Sport.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

In practical lessons you will take part in a variety of physical activities including participating in sport and improving your fitness levels. Practical lessons may take place in the Sports Hall, 3G pitch or our state-of the-art Fitness Suite. Classroom activities include group work, individual assignments, computer based tasks and written work.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through the completion of a portfolio, formal assignments, presentations, in class tests and practical assessments.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion of this course allows progression to Higher Education sports courses. This qualification is relevant to careers in multi-sports coaching, community coaching, football coaching, teaching, sports development, fitness instructing and sports therapies.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will need to purchase a college kit to use during practical sessions. You will need to complete a work placement during your course. You will also have the opportunity to take part in trips, visits and residentials.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including a GCSE at grade 4 (C) in English Language and a minimum grade 3 in Maths. You’ll also need to be willing to develop coaching skills by carrying out voluntary work in the community.
