Support Worker
Level 3 Diploma in selected specialism

Senior Healthcare Support Workers help registered practitioners deliver healthcare services to babies, infants, children, young people or adults. You will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare or therapeutic tasks, providing high quality, compassionate healthcare, following standards, policies or protocols. You may work in a range of services e.g. hospital, community, health or day case unit, someone’s home, operating theatre, assessment centre and more.

What will I learn?

Core Units include: Health and wellbeing, Duty of care and candour, safeguarding, equality and diversity, Person centred care, treatment and support, Communication, personal development, people & quality improvement and health, safety & security. You must then select an optional specialism from: adult nursing support, theatre support, mental health support, children and young people support and allied health profession – therapy support.

How will I be taught?

You will learn in the workplace with 20% off-the-job training. Classes will be taught by experienced professionals through a range of activities designed to apply your learning to real life situations.

How will I be assessed?

End point assessment including:

  • Multiple choice and short answer test
  • Observation of practice undertaken in the workplace
  • Complete learning journal with an interview

Apprentices will need to achieve Level 2 English and Maths prior to taking the end-point assessment. Throughout the apprenticeship learners must provide oral and documentary evidence of their knowledge, skills and behaviours.

What can I do next?

After a period of working and gaining experience, you may be able to work towards an Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate post or, providing you meet the entry requirements, apply to university to become a registered healthcare practitioner. You may also progress onto leadership and management qualifications.

Depending on specialism, your qualifications will be as below:

  • Adult Nursing Support: Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support 
  • Theatre Support: Level 3 Diploma in Perioperative Support
  • Mental Health Support: Level 3 Diploma in Mental Health Care
  • Children & Young People: Level 3 Diploma in Maternity & Paediatric Support 
  • Allied Health Profession: Level 3 Diploma in Allied Health Profession Support

Entry Requirements

All Apprenticeships require an initial assessment (Maths & English), interview and employment in the industry. To work in this industry you will need a DBS (disclosure and barring service) check and evidence of care certificate completion.
