This course in an ideal introduction to painting and decorating and will appeal strongly to those who either wish to pursue a career in this area or to individuals who simply would like to acquire skills in home decorating. You will learn new skills such as applying paint by brush and paperhanging. Many of our students enjoy learning the basics of specialist paint effects such as marbling and graining.
The course covers a range of techniques that will allow you to become an accomplished painter and decorator. These include; preparation of surfaces and the use of primers, application of paint and methods, types of paint, hanging wallpaper to variety of surfaces, application of specialist finishes such as rag rolling and sponging, use of access equipment in painting and decorating. You will also develop your communication skills and learn about the use of drawings and specifications when on site and the processes involved in the construction of buildings.
The course is mainly practical with classes taking place in a purpose built workshop. The workshop has a number of rooms which include ceilings, walls, chimney breasts, window reveals, skirting and door casings. There will be underpinning knowledge done in a classroom environment.

Once you have completed the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and decorating you can progress to Level 2. Some students gain an Apprenticeship/employment and in this case you would return to college on a day release basis.
This is a practical course which aims to get you into employment or self-employment. You will need white overalls and boots for the workshop sessions and you will need a pen, paper and a folder. All the tools that are needed for the course are provided while you are in College, however it would be a good idea to get a basic tool kit so you can practice outside college. This would cost approximately £50.
You must show an interest in the subject. It is essential that individuals have an adequate level of English to understand the information delivered by the tutor.
