Here are just a few: Vivian chose to study the Video Production and Editing Level 2 Award as a hobby. Believing that video is an excellent way to communicate using modern technology, Vivian is learning how to produce and edit film using Adobe Premier Pro. Vivian says, “Video itself is a fun thing to be involved in because it is practical and allows me to work as part of a team to tell a story, engage and inspire viewers. Alongside the course, I am also studying ICT to develop my computer literacy skills and capabilities.” VIVIAN VIDEO PRODUCTION AND EDITING LEVEL 2 AWARD Mum of three Lianne, decided to pursue a career in a subject she has always been passionate about, enrolling onto the Level 1 Vehicle Systems Maintenance course. Lianne quickly impressed staff at Preston College and was offered a Curriculum Support Technician role, one day per week, which she undertook alongside her studies. Progressing through the levels and enjoying her role immensely, Lianne now works four days per week and is in the final stages of studying for her Level 3 Diploma. www.preston.ac.uk LIANNE VEHICLE SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE LEVEL 1 MIG WELDING LEVEL 1 VEHICLE INSPECTION LEVEL 2 AUTO & MOBILE ELECTRICAL PRINCIPLES LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA Working as a Veterinary Nursing Assistant for almost eight years, Sue’s employer was keen to support her development by encouraging her to upskill through an apprenticeship and become a registered Veterinary Nurse. In order to enrol on the course, Sue was advised that she would need maths and English at grade 4 (previously a grade C) or above. Sue enrolled onto the Level 1 Functional Skills course, where she achieved 100%. Progressing onto Level 2 and fast tracking to the assessment, Sue successfully applied for the Veterinary Nurse apprenticeship, which she is now working towards. 5 www.preston.ac.uk Lynsey decided to join the Hairdressing Level 3 course to build upon her existing hairdressing skills, become more creative in her work and to feel more confident working within this fast-paced industry. After successfully completing the Level 2 qualification and learning so much from it, the decision to move onto the next course level was an easy decision. Lynsey says, “I love how I can use my own ideas to create new styles, as well as learning new skills at the same time.” On completion of the course, Lynsey plans to launch her own business, working from home in a newly built salon in her back garden. Since joining the course and with no prior experience, Joao has learnt how to design and build 3D models from scratch using Autodesk Maya (a software programme that visualises creations in 3D), how to digitally document his approach to projects, and how to create accurate and neat models. Joao says, “My favourite aspect of 3D modelling is the ability to work with organic shapes and having total control over what I’m doing. There are endless possibilities to Maya and this course is great for career progression into the industry, as the software is used by all of the big gaming and film companies. If you are thinking about becoming a 3D modeller, you really should consider coming to Preston College.” Mike joined the Level 2 Barbering Diploma, with no prior barbering experience, and quickly learnt a variety of techniques and basic skills that would set him up for future success. Now a fulltime barber, Mike is enjoying a highly successful barbering career as a self-employed barber with a busy and varied client list. As an adult learner, Mike juggled his course, work placement and paid employment as a DJ, to allow him to learn from experienced barbers, whilst advancing his skills and applying the theory learnt from the course into practice. Commenting, Mike said: “As an adult, I was really quite apprehensive about returning to college but I didn’t feel out of place once. 6 As a learner at Preston College you will be supported throughout your learning by a highly experienced team of tutors and support staff. The tutors teaching you will have industry experience and are dedicated to making you the most employable you can be. If you need any help with your course, the teaching staff will be your first point of contact. They will be able to support you with assignments, coursework and any queries or questions you may have about the programme. Your tutors will also be able to advise you on the range of careers open to you when you finish your course as well as progression opportunities here at Preston College. Offering a huge range of workshops, supporting you in developing Harvard referencing, assignment writing and critical analysis, the Learning Zone also has group and individual study rooms for those working on group activities and presentations, alongside areas reserved exclusively for those adults studying on Higher Education courses with us. FACILITIES We have a range of outstanding facilities across all of our courses, including a recently renovated Construction Skills Centre, 100 seat theatre and state-of-the-art iSTEM Centre – home to an array of course specific facilities, including purpose built engineering workshops, subsonic wind tunnels and fully equipped science laboratories. The wider campus also has the added benefit of an on-site fitness centre, barbering and beauty salons, all of which are available to learners, at heavily discounted prices! STUDENT SERVICES Our Student Services team are available to support all of our adult learners through the provision of a wealth of information on a variety of topics, including financial support, welfare advice, benefits advice, counselling and mental health support, safeguarding and bursary information. QUALIFIED CAREERS ADVISERS If you require more in-depth careers advice, our expert advisers are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and able to provide comprehensive, independent careers advice and guidance. Their aim is to empower you to make your own career and learning choices by providing you with the information, advice and guidance you need to make an informed decision about your next steps.
8 www.preston.ac.uk Dependent upon your individual circumstances and the specific level of course that you are seeking to study, you may be eligible to receive part or full funding to cover your tuition fees. Funding can often be complex, so our Advisors are on hand to advise you on an individual basis, on what financial contribution you may be able to receive. You may also be able to access a Bursary for financial support for some of the associated additional costs of studying a course, such as kit, equipment, travel and childcare. EMPLOYED If you are currently employed and earning an annual gross salary of £20,319 or less, you may be able to receive full funding for your tuition fees in order to study across a variety of Level 1 and Full Level 2 courses. For individuals earning more than this threshold, you may be able to receive part funding for your chosen programme of study, requiring you to contribute to the remainder of the tuition fees. This low wage entitlement is awarded based on your individual annual salary, discounting a partner’s salary or other household income. NOT CURRENTLY EMPLOYED If you are currently unemployed and are in receipt of a state benefit, you may be able to receive full funding for your tuition fees in order to study across a variety of Level 1 and Full Level 2 courses. State benefits refer to income such as Universal Credit, Job Seekers Allowance, ESA, Child Benefit and Tax Credits, but this is not an exhaustive list. ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN Where funding is not available for specific Level 3 courses and where eligible, you could apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to cover your tuition fees. Loan eligibility does not depend on your income, nor are there any credit checks, and you will not have to pay anything back until you are earning over £25,000. FINANCIAL SUPPORT PACKAGES Dependent upon your circumstances you may be eligible to receive financial support towards your tuition fees, equipment, kit, travel expenses and childcare. Our Advisors will work with you to determine all available financial support. PAYING FOR YOUR COURSE If your chosen course costs £150 or more, you can choose to pay in instalments by direct debit. To pay by instalments, your payments must be a minimum of £25 per month and there must be at least three direct debit payments and a maximum of twelve. Your first payment will be made when you enrol, with further payments taken on the first day of the month. If you wish, you can pay by cash* EMPLOYER SPONSORSHIP If your course is being sponsored by your employer we can organise for them to receive an invoice and we will require evidence that your employer has agreed to pay for your course. GETTING HERE PUBLIC TRANSPORT Preston College is accessible by a number of different bus routes. If there isn’t a suitable bus route for you, you can access college bus services from Preston Bus Station which is a 10 minute walk away from Preston train station. After seeing a friend post photographs from an earlier female multiskills course on social media, Laura decided to look into the course in more detail before signing up to the course herself. Having never undertaken any practical construction before, or been given the opportunity to do so, she felt that the course provided the chance to gain the life skills that she wished she already had. With plans to move to Australia in the future, as part of a working holiday, Laura feels that the basic skills she is learning in carpentry and joinery, plastering, plumbing and tiling, alongside the increased confidence in tool selection and use, will provide the first steps to potential employment opportunities overseas. LAURA FEMALE CONSTRUCTION MULTISKILLS LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE Having previously worked within a busy public sector accountancy team and later as a linguistics lecturer, after spending five months in rehabilitation, Mick was advised to think about a career in adult social care when the staff quickly recognised he had a natural flair for the role. Feeling like he had lost his future and crediting the staff at the rehabilitation centre with helping him to find it, Mick started a Level 2 Awareness of Mental Health course with Preston College. Since then, and with ambitions of ultimately progressing into the Counselling profession, Mick has studied Mental Health First Aid and Advocacy Level 2, Health and Social Care Level 1 and will begin his Level 2 Counselling studies later this academic year. Already offered employment within the Health and Social Care sector, Mick credits the education and support he has received at college with allowing him to forge plans for the future and progress. 13 www.preston.ac.uk I was quite apprehensive about starting the Level 2 AAT Accounting course as it had been 10 years since I completed my degree. I also wasn’t sure how I would cope with the exams due to anxiety. My tutor Kaye was outstanding. She helped me to achieve so much more than I expected and I successfully passed the course with a distinction grade. I have since progressed onto the AAT Accounting Level 3 Advanced Diploma. I am hoping to start my own bookkeeping business later this year, using the skills and knowledge I have acquired during my time at Preston College. It just goes to show what you can accomplish with hard work and excellent teaching! JENNIFER AAT ACCOUNTING LEVEL 2 & LEVEL 3 With ambitions of studying on a Personal Training programme, Adrian, who is a national bodybuilding champion in his home country of Romania, joined the Entry 2 ESOL programme at Preston College to develop his written and spoken English skills. Having travelled globally as a body building competitor, Adrian was keen to undertake a classroom/gym based fitness programme rather than an online course and began to search for appropriate study. Realising that set levels of English were required, to ensure successful completion of the written parts of the fitness programme, Adrian decided to join the Entry 2 ESOL course at Preston College to develop his English abilities. He is hopeful that the course will provide a stepping stone onto a Personal Training programme and ultimately, his dream career. ADRIAN ESOL As an already trained make-up artist at Preston College, Bhagyalakshmi has always had an interest in hair and beauty, and wanted to level up her hairdressing skills, as well as increase her confidence especially when doing hair up styles. As a learner at Preston College for a number of years, and having completed a number of courses including English Functional Skills, GCSE maths, various beauty courses, Bhagyalakshmi is now completing the Level 2 Hairdressing course. The course has not only increased Bhagyalakshmi’s confidence in hairdressing skills, it has also helped her understand the basics of what it takes to be a good hairdresser, and in the future she plans to own her own salon and provide clients a full range of hair and beauty services through to Bridal/Party make-up. 14 www.preston.ac.uk I have always had an interest in knowing how and why things work. From learning how to fix my Raleigh Chopper and Grifter in my teens, to passing my driving test in 2005. My interest grew particularly after I bought my first Classic Mini Cooper, as I wanted to maintain it correctly and independently. During my five years as a part-time adult student, I have learnt basic checks and servicing and BEN LIGHT VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA subsequently this led me to want to learn about advanced electrical fault finding and engine management diagnosis. The teaching staff were knowledgeable, supportive and were always approachable. I hope to one day continue my studies to degree level, but in the meantime I am starting the Level 1 TIG Welding course at the College next year.
15 www.preston.ac.uk Housed in the impressive iSTEM centre, the Automotive Technologies department at Preston College provides learners with access to purpose built workshops, an array of vehicles and immediate access to highly experienced industry experts, allowing all to put newly taught theory and skills into practice on demonstration cars. For those looking to start out, we offer introductory Level 1 courses, with progression right up to specialist industry benchmark courses at Level 3. Taught by highly experienced industry experts, many of AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGIES whom have previously worked as Chief Mechanics in a range of industries, including the British Touring Cars Championships, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to confidently carry out repairs to vehicles, undertaking routine maintenance, including work on engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspensions and electrical and transmission systems. 16 www.preston.ac.uk Following the traditional education route, Ruby progressed onto university, to study a demanding degree in Social Work, after completing her Level 3 in Art and Design at Preston College. Upon graduating, she successfully progressed into a role working with adults with additional needs but the birth of her daughter left Ruby seeking a more creative career. Exploring her options, Ruby joined the Level 2 Hairdressing course, before progressing onto Level 3 the following year. Throughout her time on the RUBY BARBERING LEVEL 2 two courses Ruby undertook work experience, which provided invaluable insight into the world of both hairdressing and barbering, encouraging her to continue her studies as a learner on the Level 2 Barbering course. A finalist in the Concept Hair 2021 barbering competition, Ruby now works part-time as a fully qualified barber at an established Barber Shop in Preston.

Housed in purpose built salons, the Barbering, Beauty and Hairdressing department at Preston College provides learners with access to live clients, real salon environments and industry experienced tutors, who have spent years perfecting their trades. 18 www.preston.ac.uk I am enjoying completing the ILM programme for my own continued professional development. The course has given me an insight into the importance and impact that effective leadership and management has within the workplace. I have found it interesting to take part in class discussions where we have collectively applied the assignment theory to real life work scenarios. Having a mix of people from different industries on the course has provided many different viewpoints and enriched our debates. It has also been beneficial to learn more about team working strategies and I believe this will improve my own work practices. I would highly recommend the course, not only is the qualification recognised by employers, but the information covered in the syllabus is relevant to improving the real workplace - and that must be a good thing! Absolute beginners will find Entry Level Digital Skills not only provide the skills and knowledge needed to undertake essential IT tasks confidently, but do so in a supportive learning environment with groups of likeminded individuals and vast levels of tutor support. All of our ICT qualifications require an assessment prior to enrolment to determine the right level of study for each applicant. An assessment will be arranged when an application is submitted and must be undertaken before an enrolment is processed. COMPUTING & IT If you live in Lancashire but don’t currently hold an Essential Digital Skills qualification, our Entry 3 and Level 1 Digital Skills courses will be available to you, fully funded by the Government. 22 www.preston.ac.uk Terry worked in the plastering trade for 36 years, successfully owning his own business for most of that time. Following an accident, Terry planned to progress his career into the Health and Safety field, so initially came to Preston College to join a relevant course. After a discussion with a careers advisor however, Terry decided to share his knowledge and skills with the next generation of plasterers instead, enrolling on the Certificate in Education – a qualification which would allow him to practise as a professional tutor. Successfully completing the course, Terry now teaches all levels of plastering to learners here at Preston College, transferring his 36 years of industry knowledge and experience to those he teaches. Preston College is able to support you in applying for a bursary from the City & Guilds Foundation, designed for those who find the cost of training a huge barrier to accessing the skills needed for job and career progression. Through the City & Guilds Foundation’s bursaries programme, funding for skills development is delivered to those who really need it, supporting the hardest-to-reach groups to develop skills for employment. Applications for the bursary opens three times a year, with a maximum amount of up to £6,000 available, with most bursaries granted for amounts between £2,500 and £5,000 - with no requirement to pay anything back. Currently there is a huge skills shortage in the construction industry with the industry being placed in the top five sectors requiring employees, due to sector growth, from 2018-2028. Over the past couple of years, we have seen a boom in demand for construction courses at Preston College, with additional classes and female only multiskills courses added to meet both demand and feedback. Our Level 1 courses are ideal for those looking to develop their DIY skills further or study the basics of a trade alongside a full-time job, as well as those looking to take their first steps into a complete career change. Preston College offers a new hybrid learning approach to enable learners to fit their studies around existing work and family commitments. 24 www.preston.ac.uk After spending years in customer service and sales roles, David felt like he was yet to find his dream career path. Often told he had the qualities of a Counsellor, David decided to undertake a Level 2 Counselling qualification at the University of Central Lancashire. Successfully completing this in mid-2016 and enjoying the course immensely, David joined the Level 3 Counselling Skills course at Preston College. Keen to progress a successful career in the sector, David joined the Foundation Degree in Person Centered Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2017 and has subsequently set up his own private counselling practice. With ambitions of achieving a full BSc, David joined the BSc (Hons) Person Centered Counselling and Psychotherapy degree in 2020, completing his dissertation during the first national Covid-19 lockdown. Securing employment in a School Counsellor role, with a multiple school focus, David built his private practice business whilst supporting young people in the Preston area within an educational setting. Keen to find employment closer to home and having enjoyed his time as a learner at Preston College, David applied for a part-time counselling position here at Preston College and now works three days per week at the College supporting young people. Keen to take her skills and knowledge further, Christine joined the Cutting and Fitting – Dress Design programme, a course which allows learners to create clothing that fits their own measurements. Beginning with the creation of a toile, before adapting it to make a block, successful completion of the course will allow Christine to confidently make a range of garments from an adapted pattern. Learning from tutor Jennifer, who Christine describes as both fantastic and inspirational, Christine is enjoying the programme, where she has made friends for life. 28 www.preston.ac.uk *T&Cs apply My journey to Preston College has been an unusual one to say the least! I was born in New York but mostly raised and educated in New Jersey. From a young age I always loved English and knew I wanted to teach it one day. So, as soon as I earned my BA (Hons) in English, I hit the ground running, teaching young adults in a pre-university course offered at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Upon moving to the UK, I found that I needed to re-train if I was going to continue teaching and enrolled onto a PGCE. As part of my placement, I taught adults GCSE and Functional Skills English and I loved it! The following year I joined Preston College and have never looked back. My true passion is teaching adults, as they have reached a juncture in their lives where motivation, opportunity and necessity collide and create ideal conditions for learning. TAMMARA ENGLISH TUTOR Eddy joined the Level 3 Education and Training course after spending over 20 years successfully working in the joinery trade. Hoping to teach the next generation of learners his skills, and having previously undertaken work in an Alternative Provision Provider, Eddy joined the programme in September 2021, where he enjoyed learning new skills, sharing ideas and working with peers from a range of industry sectors. Crediting the course with providing engaging lesson ideas, behaviour management techniques and a better understanding of how to set varying levels of work, Eddy had the opportunity to work with a range of different people from diverse backgrounds and industry sectors. Now enjoying a better understanding of how to present and engage following successful completion of the course, Eddy secured employment with Lancashire County Council in the Probation Team, where he works with individuals on a 1-2-1 basis, engaging them in learning through the teaching of basic joinery skills.
