This advanced level course provides the perfect grounding for a career in the Public Services. You will be taught in and out of the classroom, including theoretical lessons and outdoor practical activities. Through a range of projects you will develop the essential knowledge and skills you need for working in the industry.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Units of study include: Government, policies and the public services; Leadership and teamwork in the public services; Citizenship, diversity and the public services; Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services; Physical preparation for public services; Fitness testing for uniformed public services; International institutions and human rights; Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services; Outdoor and adventurous expeditions; Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities; Crime and its effects on society; and Responding to emergency service incidents.

You will be taught in and out of classroom, including theoretical lessons and outdoor activities.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through the completion of practical, vocational based tasks and theoretical activities and assignments.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

The department runs trips such as ‘kip in a ship’ visit to London and Parliament, army five day residential, HMP Manchester training school and training opportunities with 999 services. Outdoor activities may include mountain biking, wall climbing and hill walking. There may be additional costs for day trips and residentials. You will need a public services uniform for activities and training.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

The Extended Diploma is worth up to 168 UCAS points (depending on your grades) this allows progression to university level courses. Alternatively you may seek employment in a public service role. This qualification is relevant to the following careers: PCSO, Special Constable, Restorative Justice, Rehabilitation of Offenders, Community Schemes, Advisory Service, Armed Forces, Blue-Light Services, Public Services Support Roles, Security or Probation Officer.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including grade 4 in either English Language or Maths with a minimum grade 3 for the other subject.
