Health and Social Care is a fast growing sector for jobs within both the local and national economy in a range of settings such as hospitals, doctors surgeries, private care homes, dental practices and pharmacies. This course will provide you with an in-depth knowlege of the core areas in health and social care and support progression into Higher Education or employment.
The qualification you will study for is the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care.
Units of study: Care Support Needs; Dementia; Science; Human Lifespan; Working in Health & Social Care; Assessing Development; and Safe Practices.
You will be taught by our professional teachers who are experts in their area and have worked with a range of client groups (elderly, young people, special educational needs) in a variety of roles including; Residential Social Workers, Nurses, Carers, Managers, Support Workers and Safeguarding Officers. To ensure teachers' knowledge stays current and relevant all our staff regularly complete professional development.
A good work placement report and evidence of 200 hours are mandatory to complete this programme.
Work experience is a key part of your learning and you will be supported throughout so you develop your skills and knowledge in your chosen area.
You can progress on to a University course or into a career with a wide range of pathways available, including a variety of positions in the sector. Preston College alumni are now working in fields such as nursing; midwifery; social work; pharmacy; radiography; speech therapy; physiotherapy; podiatry; and operating department practitioner.
You will be required to complete an industry placement to gain work experience. Your placement will consist of four block weeks per year and will be a key part of your learning.
You need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 preferably for progression in English Language or Maths at grade 4. You will also need DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance for your industry placement.
