The GCSE Combined Science qualification covers chemistry, physics and biology. This course is ideal for those looking to gain a level of Science qualification often needed to progress into higher level employment positions or higher education.
As a combined GCSE, successful completion of this course will provide you with the equivalent of two GCSE grades.
Please note: This course starts in September 2025. You may apply now; however, applications will not be processed until enrolments open in April 2025. A course advisor will reach out once we can proceed with your application.
On the GCSE Combined Science course you will study six modules:
The course is theory-based but there are core practical experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics that you will need to understand to successfully complete your exams.
The nature of this course means that learning will typically adopt a blended approach. This means that some sessions will take place in the purpose built i-STEM Centre, home to dedicated Science classrooms and labs and some sessions will be delivered via the college’s online, e-learning platform, Canvas.
The course is theory-based but there are core practical experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics that you will need to understand to successfully complete your exams. Assessment takes place via six separate exams set by awarding body Edexcel - two Biology exams, two chemistry exams and two physics exams. This course is a combined course and is equivalent of two GCSE grades, with awarding grades ranging from 9 to 1.
On completion of the course, there are options you can take, depending upon the requirements of your desired career. Potential course progression may include Access to HE: Science at Preston College.
You are required to bring pens, pencils, paper and a calculator to each class. You may also wish to purchase your own lab equipment, such as white lab coats, googles and a scientific calculator. Further details will be provided on your first day.
Depending upon your personal circumstances, you may be eligible to apply for the college bursary to help with the cost of equipment. Full details will be provided at enrolment, in your Welcome Brochure.
