The Construction Skills Project

A bespoke programme for young people looking to start a career in the construction industry.

Preston College have partnered with Vinci Construction to offer an alternative way to begin your construction career. Working on a real construction site you will undertake training, develop trade skills, and gain invaluable work experience. The Construction Skills Project is designed to equip you with foundation skills and a qualification to prepare you for further study in college or an apprenticeship.

On the construction site you’ll have a member of the Preston College team on hand to provide support, answer questions and show you around. They will also arrange your personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety boots and work clothing.

The Construction Skills Project

The Construction Skills Project is a learning programme that lasts for 15 weeks. You will be expected to attend every week, for two days per week. During that time, you will learn and develop key skills and knowledge such as;

  • Health & Safety: You need to know how to stay safe on a construction site. There is a lot of machinery, tools and hazards to understand and be aware of. You’ll also need to complete a site induction.
  • Trade Skills: An introduction to bricklaying, plastering and joinery skills.
  • Digital Skills: Use digital devices and the internet to complete work-based tasks.
  • Employment Skills: Covering job searching, CV building, application forms, and interview skills.

The programme will also give you the opportunity to gain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card which will show employers that you have completed health and safety training in construction.

Towards the end of your programme, your tutor will help you prepare for your next step. You may want to continue to develop your skills in one trade area with an apprenticeship or college course. If you are unsure your tutor can provide advice on career paths and your options.
