Counselling Learners Express Themselves Through Art and Music

Learners on the BSc (Hons) in Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy course have recently been immersing themselves in sound responsive expressive arts sessions.  Learners contrasted working in silence with mark marking on a large scale to different genres of music.  Music that was uplifting, energetic, sorrowful and thought provoking were engaged with by the counselling learners. They considered how different people identify with the same sounds and how they affect us emotionally.

Following the sessions course leader, Kevin Loughran, facilitated personal development sessions on how to apply these contemporary practices to industry experience, considering working with clients such as children or those experiencing grief and loss.  Learners on this course take part in various activities and trips to further enhance their learning journey.

Lyndsey Roe, Head of Quality and HE says: “I have been incredibly impressed by what was produced in the session. All of the learners were fully engaged and it was a great, alternative platform for them to learn how to express themselves; something that they will be able to apply in future practice when they become qualified at degree level. It was a great session and I look forward to what the learners continue to embrace through contemporary and expressive ways to practice such as this.”
