HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a carpentry and joinery learner at Preston’s College, you will perfect your skills in practical workshops consisting of purpose-built areas for  different carpentry and joinery jobs, including kitchens, doors and roofs. You will work your way around the different areas, choosing where you wish to start based on already held skills and interests and can go back to perfect jobs, if you wish.

Preston’s College has invested heavily in the joinery workshops, that are home to an array of new machinery, including CNC machines and we are the only college in the country with these machines, meaning our facilities really do reflect industry, as much as possible. The nature of the course makes in ideal for learners who have some site experience or have recently completed the Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery course with us.

Despite being a practical role in industry, there is theory to learn that complements the practical work and as a result you can expect to spend 50% of your time in the workshops and 50% of your time in the classroom.

Opportunities may arise throughout the course to work for paying customers, with the Level 2 aiming to test and challenge joinery skills, whilst providing progression opportunities. As our on-site facilities reflect industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable PPE, including safety boots. In addition, you will need paper, pens, pencils and drawing equipment.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

To successfully achieve the qualification all learners must complete a workbook, eight end of module tests and 22 practical tests, where the production of Level 2 standard work in required.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of this qualification you will have obtained the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress on to a higher level qualification in the same or similar occupational area, or into employment.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The nature of the Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery course means that whilst this is a very practical programme, there is theory behind the practical that must be learnt. As a result, learners can expect to spend 50% of their time undertaking practical tasks and 50% of their time in the classroom, this typically works out as one evening per week completing practical and one evening per week completing theory-based learning. To successfully achieve the qualification all learners must complete a workbook, eight end of module tests and 22 practical tests, where the production of Level 2 standard work in required.
