Dry Lining is a modern method of fitting plasterboard or similar materials to create smooth, high-quality walls and ceilings, offering a faster, cleaner alternative to traditional plastering.
This hands-on qualification is ideal if you are looking to start a career in the trade or if you are an experienced plasterer keen to broaden your expertise in this growing area of construction. You’ll develop practical skills and techniques used across today’s domestic and commercial building projects, gaining the confidence to deliver work to professional industry standards.
Accredited by City & Guilds and endorsed by Construction Skills, the Sector Skills Council for the Construction Industry, this course gives you the recognised credentials and experience to progress in the modern construction sector.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
As part of this qualification, you’ll develop the knowledge, practical skills, and technical expertise needed to work confidently in the dry lining trade.
You’ll start by completing a core Health & Safety module, along with learning about building construction principles, and information & communication in the workplace. You’ll then move on to specialist technical units including:
Installing Suspended Ceiling Systems
Working with metal furring suspended ceilings and ceiling lining systems
Understanding background materials, components, and fixings
Installing and fixing plasterboards to ceilings
Calculating material quantities from specifications and working drawings
Installing Partitions
Setting out and installing partitions to include services, junctions, doors, and windows
Fixing plasterboard to partitions using correct tools and materials
Understanding metal characteristics, sheet materials, and fixings
Installing Wall Linings and Encasement Systems
Working with frame and frameless encasement systems
Selecting and fixing the correct components
Following installation procedures for different wall lining systems
Fixing Sheet Materials Using Direct Bond Methods
Safely fixing plasterboards using direct bond techniques
Assessing background suitability and preparing surfaces
Mixing adhesives and jointing compounds
Identifying potential issues when mixing, selecting and fixing materials
Setting out installations around angles, openings, and services
Applying and sanding finishes, including perimeter seals, dabs, skirtings, and wall cupboards
Applying Tape and Jointing Systems
Using different tapes, beads, and jointing compounds
Fixing reinforcement tapes to external angles
Applying and finishing tape joints to a professional standard
Carrying out minor surface repairs
Working with Specialist Systems for Dry Lining and Interiors
Applying thermal and acoustic insulation solutions
Understanding environments that require specialist materials and fixings
Enhancing acoustic performance with advanced systems
Applying Finishing Plaster to Plasterboard
Selecting, mixing, and preparing finishing materials
Applying finishing plasters to walls and ceilings

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
Training takes place in realistic, fully equipped workshop environments, where you’ll use professional tools and materials for demonstrations, practical sessions, and assessments, preparing you for work in the construction industry.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
To achieve this qualification, you’ll be assessed via a multiple choice examination, that covers your knowledge outcomes at the end of each module. You will also be assessed via structured practical tasks designed to demonstrate your competence, linked to the assessment criteria of each module.
Assessments will be externally verified by City & Guilds.
You will undertake 9 multiple choice examinations that range from 40-80 minutes each, with a maximum of 40 questions in each examination.
Practical assignments; you will complete x2 practical performance activities for each module. these will be undertaken in simulated conditions and will be observed against the criteria of each module.
The qualification is awarded when all mandatory and additional units have been achieved.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
Completion of this qualification can enable you to progress into employment within the construction industry. For those without any Plastering experience or qualifications, you may wish to compliment your skills and progress on to a Plastering Diploma or Apprenticeship.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.
Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate.
In order to engage in the guided on-line learning components of your programme and to undertake modular assessments, the development of your digital skills will also be at the core of our delivery and embedded throughout your full programme of study.
