This course has been designed and developed exclusively for women who would like to learn the basics of a variety of construction trades, but feel more comfortable doing so in a female only environment.

The programme provides the first step to gaining a recognised qualification in the construction industry, whilst also providing insight into a number of different trade areas. The nature of the course makes it ideal for those who are looking to start a career in construction and those who would like to learn the basics in a variety of key construction trades for home improvements and DIY purposes.

This course is the women only group, but if you would prefer a mixed group, we offer this too. Just select your preference on the on-line application form.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Level 1 Multiskills course you will study a range of modules, including:

  • Brickwork
  • Joinery
  • Plastering
  • Plumbing
  • Wall and Floor Tiling
  • Health and Safety

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a multiskills learner at Preston’s College, you will perfect your skills in purpose built workshops, all housed within the vast Construction department. You will have access to plastering bays, a large purpose built bricklaying workshop, area specialisms for specific joinery jobs including kitchens, doors and roofs, multi-purpose tiling pods and plumbing bays, home to toilet systems, basins and hydraulic benches.

The workshops replicate a live, working environment, providing a real flavour of what life in industry is like. In addition, the vast majority of time on the course is spent in the various workshops, as this is a highly practical course.

The course aims to stimulate a real life environment that will test and challenge newly developed skills and as our on-site facilities reflect industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable PPE, including steel toe cap work boots, gloves and overalls or clothes that you do not mind getting dirty as elements of this course can be messy!

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Informal assessment of practical work will be done to the relevant industry standards, supported with discussion. Assessment of theory knowledge will be via completion of the Level 1 in Basic Construction Skills and GQA Level 1 in Health and Safety modules.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of the course, you will have the skills and knowledge to progress on to one of our Level 1 Construction Trade courses.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The qualification comprises of a NOCN Level 1 in Basic Construction Skills and GQA Level 1 in Health and Safety. The nature of this course means that it is a highly practical programme, with classroom learning and written work forming a very small part of the course. 90% of your time will be spent in the workshops, undertaking practical tasks, with 10% of the time spent studying underpinning theory.

Informal assessment of practical work will be done to the relevant industry standards, supported with discussion. Assessment of theory knowledge will be via completion of the Level 1 in Basic Construction Skills and GQA Level 1 in Health and Safety modules.

In order to develop your technical skills, you will be required to purchase professional equipment including:

  • Appropriate Safety Boots
  • (Steel toe cap)
  • Overalls (OR old clothes that you
  • do not mind getting dirty)
  • Gloves

All other equipment will be provided.
