Health and Social Care is a fast growing sector for jobs within both the local and national economy in a range of settings such as hospitals, doctors surgeries, private care homes, dental practices and pharmacies. This course will provide you with an in-depth knowlege of the core areas in health and social care and support progression into Higher Education or employment.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Units of study: Safeguarding; Communication; Human Growth & Development; Infection Prevention; Psychological Perspectives; Sociology; Working in Health & Social Care; Reflective Practice; Empowerment; Anatomy; Research; Health Education; Social Policy; and Ethics.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by our professional teachers who are experts in their area and have worked with a range of client groups (elderly, young people, special educational needs) in a variety of roles including; Residential Social Workers, Nurses, Carers, Managers, Support Workers and Safeguarding Officers. To ensure teachers' knowledge stays current and relevant all our staff regularly complete professional development. Recent training has covered topics such as domestic violence, cancer awareness, young people and mental health and safeguarding.

A good work placement report and evidence of 200 hours are mandatory to complete this programme.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

You can progress on to a University course or into a career with a wide range of paths available, including a variety of positions in the sector with Preston's College alumni working in fields such as nursing; midwifery; social work; pharmacy; radiography; speech therapy; physiotherapy; podiatry; and operating department practitioner.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

Work experience is a key part of your learning and you will be supported throughout so you develop your skills and knowledge in your chosen area.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) preferably for progression in English Language or Maths at grade 4 (C). You will also need DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance for your work experience placement.
