PRINCIPLES OF TEAM LEADING – LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE

This Team Leading qualification is designed to provide you with the knowledge and understanding required to successfully lead a team. Completion of the qualification will enable you to gain a wide range of management skills that you can put into practice, building your leadership capabilities to ensure you can manage your team confidently. 

This course is ideal if you have some team management responsibilities but have no formal leadership training or qualifications in this area.

Duration: 24 September 2025 - 11 February 2026

When: Wednesday (every other week) 6pm - 9pm 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Level 2 Principles of Team Leading course you will study a range of modules, including:

Principles of team leading  

·        Leadership styles within organisations 

·        Team dynamics, team role theory and behaviour

·        Techniques used to manage the work of teams, setting targets and workflow 

·        Change management, implementation and impact

·        Motivating teams 

Understanding business   

·        Business structures and environment, SWOT analysis and external influences

·        Business performance, management reports, KPI’s and stakeholder management

·        Responsibilities and accountabilities within an organisation 

Communicating work-related information 

·        Communication techniques with interested audiences

·        Currency of information, accuracy and confidence

·        Effectively preparing objectives, setting agenda’s and leading meetings  

Managing performance and conflict

·        Benchmarking in managing team performance 

·        Quality management techniques in managing performance

·        Addressing underperformance

·        Methods, approaches and consequence of unresolved conflict

Equality and diversity

·        Behaviours that support equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace

·        Equality legislation and organisational policy

Health and safety in the workplace

·        Understanding health and safety fundamentals and assessing workplace hazards

·        Implementing safety measures and communicating safety procedures

Introduction to mentoring

·        The role of a mentor, responsibilities and boundaries of a mentor 

·        Mentoring skills and techniques and mentoring arrangements

Personal development

·         The role of a Team Leader and the skills required to carry out the role effectively

·        Authority and accountability

·        Personal development plan based on skills and knowledge audit

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by an experienced tutor and attend fortnightly workshops. 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

As a student you will create a portfolio of evidence generated from the assessment tasks that you are set. This will demonstrate achievement of all of the learning outcomes associated with each unit of study.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

After completion of the Level 2 Team Leading course, you may wish to apply to study on the ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management.

To ensure that your current role and experience supports progression on to the Leadership & Management programme, you will be required to complete a Skills Scan.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Whilst formal English qualifications are not required for direct entry on to this programme, you will need to possess proficient English skills that will enable you to fully participate in all aspects of your learning and successfully achieve your qualification.

Your level of English skills will be assessed during the application process and will be determined by any previously obtained qualifications or via an English assessment, where appropriate.

Whilst not essential at this level, it would be beneficial if you were currently employed in a supervisory role. However, it may be that this is aspirational and you are seeking to gain the skills that will enable you to progress into a supervisory position in the future.
