SUPPORTED INTERNSHIP - DFN PROJECT SEARCH

DFN Project SEARCH is an academic year-long supported internship programme designed for young people aged 18–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). It is delivered in partnership with Preston College, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary and a range of other local employers. It offers the opportunity to gain valuable work experience matched to each intern’s skills, interests and abilities, while developing independence and employability skills. Alongside their placements, interns attend onsite daily classroom sessions focused on building confidence, preparing for work and developing essential life skills.

The internship is unpaid, as it is designed to be the final step in education before moving into employment and adult life. At the end of the programme, your EHCP will cease as you transition into employment.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Classroom sessions cover topics such as team building, workplace safety, technology, self-advocacy, financial literacy, health and wellbeing, preparing for employment and communication skills.

You will take part in up to three work placements, gaining practical and transferable skills while developing confidence, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. You’ll also receive support to create a CV, practise interview techniques and apply for jobs.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be supported onsite by:

  • A Facilitator, who delivers daily employability sessions and provides guidance throughout the day.
  • A Job Coach, who supports you in your placement, helping you learn new tasks, build confidence and work towards your goals.

Your learning programme is personalised to your needs and aspirations, supporting your journey into employment.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Progress is measured through RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) and linked to your EHCP and Preparing for Adulthood outcomes.

You will set SMART targets and receive regular feedback from staff, mentors and placement managers.

All progress is recorded and celebrated using Evidence for Learning.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

The programme prepares you for your next step, helping you move confidently into adult life with the skills, experience and independence that employers value.
