This Level 1 Understanding Community Interpreting course is designed for adults who are curious about interpreting and want a clear, practical understanding of what the role involves. You’ll gain a solid introduction to the responsibilities, ethics and core skills needed to work confidently in community settings such as health, education and public services.
This course is ideal if you want to:
Support people who experience language barriers in everyday situations

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This course covers 3 mandatory units:
English Language Awareness - develop an understanding of how English is used in bilingual contexts and how to use your language skills effectively and appropriately
Community and Organisations - learn about the different community settings and sectors where interpreters are commonly required to work
The Role of the Community Interpreter – explore the responsibilities of the Community Interpreter, including professional conduct and the types of settings in which they work
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You will learn through classroom-based sessions, supported by tasks and activities set outside of sessions to support and develop your understanding.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, which may include observation records, audio recordings, completed workbooks, photographs, and other relevant materials.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
This introductory course opens the door to further progression, guiding you towards Level 2 and Level 3 interpreting qualifications, helping you build your skills and confidence over time, and move closer to becoming a fully qualified interpreter.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
While this qualification does not usually allow you to work as a paid interpreter, it does provide a clear introduction to community interpreting and the skills involved. It is intended as a starting point for you to explore the role and decide whether interpreting is the right path for you.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To get the most out of this course, you’ll need to meet the following language requirements:
You must be fluent in another language (in addition to English) to at least end‑of‑high‑school level across all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
Your English level must be a minimum of B1 / high Entry 3 in all four skills. B2 / Level 1 is ideal, as it will help you progress more confidently through the course
Your English skills will be assessed before you are accepted onto the programme to ensure this course is the right fit for you.
