Principles of electrical science

• Understand electrical supply systems
• How electrical properties affect electrical circuits, systems and equipment

• Principles and applications of electrical heating

Electrical design and installation practices and procedures

• Understand the characteristics and applications of supply systems and consumer's equipment
• Earthing and protection
• Protection against overcurrent
• Electrical systems and circuits

Principles of inspection, testing and commissioning electrical systems

• Safe isolation and inspection of electrical circuits
• Knowledge of the requirements for safe testing and commissioning of electrical installations and testing before circuits are energised
• Understand the requirements for testing energised installations
• Requirements for the completion of electrical installation certificates and associated documentation

Inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical systems

• confirm safety of system and equipment prior to completion of inspection, testing and commissioning

• Commission electrical systems and equipment

Electrical system fault diagnosis and rectification

As a Level 3 Electrical student at Preston College, you’ll benefit from a dedicated workspace designed to help you develop your practical skills. Our workshops replicate a real working environment and are equipped with industry-standard materials, giving you an authentic insight into life in the construction industry.

You’ll study two evenings per week, from 6–9pm, alongside approximately 3–4 hours of independent study.

As part of the level 3 qualification, you will undertake a practical synoptic assessment where you will demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and skills learnt throughout the course.  You will also complete a written assessment, recalling knowledge across the qualification, demonstrating an understanding of the concepts and theories at level 3.

This technical qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and practical skills needed for working in the electrotechnical industry, which will prepare you to enter an electrotechnical apprenticeship programme or progression onto further levels of study.

As our Construction Centre reflects industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including work boots and overalls (or old clothing).

To undertake this qualification, you are required to hold a level 2 diploma in Electrical Skills, C&G 8202.  You are required to hold a level 2 in Maths and English, without certificates in Maths and English you maybe required to carry out an assessment.

This course develops your knowledge and understanding of the requirements and considerations surrounding electrical installations under the British standard regulation BS 7671. Understanding and following the regulation, as well being a legal requirement, ensures safety and professionalism within the building services industry. The unit covers the fundamental principles of the BS7671 regulation itself as well as how it impacts on the selection and erection of equipment for electrical installations and the inspection and testing of systems.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to complete the assessment for the 18^th Edition Wiring regulations.
