This Level 1 Award in Volunteering to Support English Language Teaching and Learning is designed for adults who want to support students of English in a practical, informed and supportive way. It is an ideal starting point if you are interested in volunteering or working alongside ESOL students in educational or community settings, even if you have no formal experience.

This course is suitable if you:

  • Would like to understand how people learn English as a second language and how best to support them
  • Are considering future roles in education, community support or learning support, or want to develop the skills needed to work with ESOL learners in settings such as schools, colleges and community organisations
  • Want to explore how personal, social and environmental factors can affect learning, and how to recognise and respond to the challenges some students face
  • Would like to understand the importance of safeguarding and confidentiality when working with students
  • Have learned English as a second language yourself and would like to use that experience to support others

Whether you’re considering a new career direction or simply want to enhance your volunteering skills, this course offers a supportive and realistic starting point.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course covers 4 mandatory units:

  • Assisting in the Classroom
  • Safeguarding in the English Language Classroom
  • Practising Language Use
  • Providing Opportunities for Social Engagement

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will learn through classroom-based sessions, supported by tasks and activities set outside of sessions to support and develop your understanding.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, which may include observation records, audio recordings, completed workbooks, photographs, and other relevant materials.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To get the most out of this course, you’ll need to meet the following language requirements:

  • Your English level must be a minimum of B1 / high Entry 3 in all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. B2 / Level 1 is ideal, as it will help you progress more confidently through the course.
  • Your English skills will be assessed before you are accepted onto the programme to ensure this course is the right fit for you.

These requirements are in place to help you succeed—strong language skills will give you the confidence and ability to achieve the learning outcomes.
