Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of crime and criminal behaviour. You will explore the different types of crime, how crime is reported to the Police and by the media, the different personnel involved in criminal cases and the criminal justice system in England and Wales. You will apply your skills and knowledge to criminological theories and how these are applied by public law makers, and review criminal cases to evaluate if the verdicts are safe and just.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

There will be a mixture of practical and theory based lessons, looking into real life crime case studies and gaining an understanding of how crime impacts on society. Theory sessions will be brought to life by industry guest speakers and individuals in the community who respond to and deal with crimes. There will also be opportunities to visit the local law courts to see how theory, laws and policies are applied.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This course is worth up to 56 UCAS points (depending on your grades). When combined with other subjects from our combined studies package you will have the opportunity to gain up to 168 UCAS points (the equivalent of three A-Levels at A*).

This quallification will support progression to higher education courses in humanities, specifically for anyone looking for careers in law, the Police, criminal forensic science and psychology.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

This course can only be studied as part of a combined studies package. It will run subject to sufficient student numbers and availability of government funding. 

As part of the Combined Studies package, Criminology complements studies in Science, Psychology, Business and Uniformed Protective Services.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need five grade 5s including English and maths. This course can only be studied as part of a combined studies package.
