Engineers are paramount for the continued development of the world around us. From designing and manufacturing aircraft, vehicles, bridges and buildings to the development of new technologies and new horizons engineers are leading the changes to the way people live, communicate and travel.

This course has been designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need to work in the engineering industry. As well as covering engineering in general you will also gain a broad experience of engineering’s multi-skilled technical roles to help you decide on your career path. This qualification forms part of the Level 2 Apprenticeship frameworks and can be used as a stepping stone to Level 3 Engineering courses such as the new T-Level in Engineering (available at Preston College in September 2022).

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Units of Study: Engineering Environment Awareness; Engineering Techniques; Engineering Mathematics & Science Principles; Electrical & Electronic Principles; Computer Numerical Control; and Producing Components.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught in the iSTEM Centre by industry experienced tutors. There will also be opportunities to work with engineering companies.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will complete projects to show your skills and this will be part of your assessment. You will also complete observed practical tasks and assignments (some will be timed).

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On successful completion of this course you can progress to the classroom based Level 3 Engineering course or the new T-Level in Engineering (available in 2022), providing you meet any additional entry requirements (e.g. maths and English as grade 4 or above).

This qualification is relevant to a wide range of engineering related careers including several engineering Apprenticeships. Career opportunities include: Aeronautical Engineer, Electrical & Electronic Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Manufacturing or Production Electrical Engineer, Maintenance & Service Engineer and a Project, Quality or Design Engineer.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

For workshop activities you will need to purchase suitable overalls and work boots.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above including English Language and Maths.
