T-LEVEL IN SCIENCE

Duration: 2 years
Level: Level 3
Last Updated: 02-02-21

T-Levels are innovative new courses that combine technical learning, practical work and a minimum 45 day (315 hours) industry placement with a local employer to ensure you have relevant and real experience in the workplace.

This new qualification has been developed with employers within the industry to ensure you learn the skills, behaviours and knowledge that will make you the most employable, now and in the future.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The content of the course is split into a core component, which is standard across all T-Levels, and an occupational specialism which is specific to the Science T-Level qualification.

The core component provides a broad understanding of the science industry and covers a range of topics including: working within the sector; managing information and data; principles of good scientific and clinical practice;  scientific methodology; core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology; experimental equipment and techniques and further science knowledge including cell cycle and cellular respiration, enzyme and protein structure, pathogens, classification of biological materials, kinetic changes and relevant analytical techniques

The occupational specialism in Laboratory Sciences will allow you to develop the relevant skills in preparation for your career in science. The occupational specialism will cover topics specific to that aspect of the science industry.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

80% of your studies will be within the College, this will be either in a classroom where you will build theoretical knowledge, or in one of our specialist work areas where you can develop your practical skills.

20% of the qualification will involve a 45 day (315 hours) industry placement with a local employer. During this time you will gain real work experience within the science industry, placing you in a great position to progress into employment once you complete your T-Level qualification.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will complete formal assessments and examinations.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

T-Levels are equivalent to three A-Levels. Gaining a T-Level can help you with progression onto higher study, Apprenticeships or into skilled employment. Your T-Level will also be worth UCAS points. A T-Level at grade Distinction* is worth the same as three A-Levels at A* and will be recognised by universities and other providers, meaning you have the option to continue your studies after college.

The career options available to you will depend on the specialist units you select. The Science Industry has a wide range of careers and jobs roles and you should speak to your tutor about your ambitions and identify the units most relevant to your chosen career. Career options could include working as a technical support scientist, metrology technician or food technician.
