This course will provide you with the knowledge to improve customers’ overall well-being, enhance their fitness levels, improve their confidence and help them train for specific sports or events. You will design tailored gym programmes, encouraging gym users to train effectively and ensuring that they work out safely.
You will learn how to plan and prepare gym based exercise programmes for both individuals and groups including motivation, a variety of exercises on CV machines, fixed weight machines, free weights, body weight exercises and various standing and lying stretches. You will also cover the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating as well as the structure and function of the heart, circulatory, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems and skeleton, postural and core stability and the nervous and energy systems. The six modules of study include: Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise & Health, Principles of Exercise for Fitness & Health, Health, Safety & Welfare in a Fitness Environment, Know How to Support Clients who take part in Physical Activity, Planning Gym Based Exercise and Instructing Gym Based Exercise.
This course is delivered by the FIT Education team at Preston’s College, who hold over 45 years combined experience in the industry.

- 2 x Externally Set Multiple Choice Exam paper
- 1 x Gym Based, planned session to include; a session overview and programme card – written
- 1 x Delivery of a Gym Based Exercise Session – practical
- 1 x Evaluation of your session – written.
Successful completion of this course allows you to work in a gym and carry out all duties related to the vocation. Progression routes: Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Exercise to Music and/or Children, Level 2 Award in Circuit and/or Group Indoor Cycling, Level 2 Chair Based Exercise, Level 2 Walk leading, Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Personal Training, Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral, Level 3 Adapting Exercise for Independently Active Older People or Level 3 Adapting Exercise for Ante and Post Natal Clients.

You must have experience of regular gym use including CV machines, fixed, free and body weight exercises, a high level of fitness. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology would be beneficial but is not essential. You must also attend an interview.
