This course is an ideal starting point for a career in the plumbing sector. You will develop a broad range of skills to progress into employment. There is a combination of practical and theoretical elements covering essentials such as health and safety, pipework fabrication, installation and repair as well as plumbing science and technology.
Units of Study: The structure of the construction industry, Fundamental safe working practices, Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwelling, Site preparation or working in the construction industry, Installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems, Plumbing science and technology and Copper pipework, plastic pressure pipework and low carbon steel pipework fabrication.
All practical activities are carried out within our state-of-the-art workshops with theory work being a mix of classroom and project based activities. The course content is 50% practical and 50% theory.
Assessment will be through a combination of practical, portfolio and multi-choice assessments.
After Level 1 you can progress to a related Level 2 programme or seek employment as a Plumbing & Heating Apprentice. After Level 2 you can progress to a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Gas Utilisation. After Level 3 you can seek employment in the industry or set up your own business.
There are opportunities to demonstrate your skills and abilities through SkillBuild and other related competitions. You will need your own personal protective equipment including safety boots (you must have these on your first day) and work wear clothing. Although all other tools and equipment are provided, you will need to purchase stationery items for use in the classroom.
All students in the Construction department start at Level 1 in order to develop their skills to progress to an Apprenticeship. A lot of students are recruited by employers straight from the classroom to a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship during, or at the end of, their Level 1 course.
At Level 1 you will need a profile of mainly grade 2s (Es) at GCSE including English Language and Maths. At Level 2 you need the Level 1 in Plumbing and GCSEs in maths and English at grade 4 (C) or above. Fast track entry to Level 2 may be available for some students.
