This intermediate level course provides the perfect starting point for a career or further study in the public services industry. You’ll learn transferable skills which will prepare you for the career opportunities in this exciting industry.
Jobs in the public sector are highly competitive and you’ll need to be willing to work hard in order to meet their stringent entry requirements. You’ll be taught the background knowledge you need in the classroom and take part in outdoor practical activities to improve your fitness levels.
Units include: Teamwork and communication skills; Employment skills; Career planning and self-assessment; Personal development through adventurous activities; Community and cultural awareness; Land navigation; and Improving health and fitness.
You will be taught in and out of the classroom, involving theoretical lessons and outdoor practical activities. Through a range of projects you will develop the essential knowledge and skills you need for working in the industry.
Successful completion of projects will be part of your assessment. You will also be assessed through the completion of a portfolio, vocational assessments and formal assignments.
After successful completion of Level 2 you progress to the Level 3 course in Public Services. The qualification is relevant to the following careers: Community Schemes, Armed Forces, Blue-Light Services, Public Service Support Roles (e.g. call centres, customer services), Security, Support Work or Probation Service.
The department runs trips such as ‘kip in a ship’ visit to London and Parliament, army residential, HMP Manchester training school and training opportunities with 999 services. Outdoor activities may include mountain biking, wall climbing and hill walking. There may be additional costs for day trips and residentials. You will need a public services uniform for activities and training.
You need four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Language and Maths.
