Preston College has been reaccredited as a College of Sanctuary

We are proud to announce our successful reaccreditation as a College of Sanctuary. Preston College originally achieved this esteemed status in 2018, becoming the first-ever College of Sanctuary in the United Kingdom, and we continue to uphold our commitment to promoting a culture of support, inclusivity and excellence in ESOL (English as a Second Language) education.

The College of Sanctuary initiative recognises educational institutions that go above and beyond in providing a safe and supportive environment for learners, particularly those seeking sanctuary. This reaccreditation further solidifies Preston College’s dedication to promoting a sense of belonging and understanding among its diverse cohort of learners.

Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive at Preston College, expressed his enthusiasm about the reaccreditation, stating, “We are thrilled to be reaccredited as a College of Sanctuary. This reaffirms our commitment to providing a nurturing environment for all learners.”

He adds: “This achievement reflects the collective dedication of our staff, learners, and the wider community in promoting a culture of inclusion and understanding.”

The College of Sanctuary status is awarded to institutions that demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to welcoming individuals seeking sanctuary, including refugees and asylum seekers. Preston College’s ongoing provision includes language support programmes, awareness campaigns, and community engagement activities that contribute to the creation of a compassionate and inclusive learning environment.

The accreditation is awarded by City of Sanctuary UK, a nationally coordinated network of organisations and services, including councils, universities, theatres and libraries that welcome and support refugees and people seeking asylum.

Sara Trewhitt, Director of Operations, Schools & FE Colleges of Sanctuary Lead says: “The review panel has enthusiastically agreed to re-accredit Preston College as a FE College of Sanctuary. Thanks again for your work and incredible contribution to the wider development of the FE Colleges of Sanctuary programme. It has been such a delight to work with you, and so pleasing to see this re-accreditation process completed.”
