ACCESS TO HE: CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

This course is designed for people who want to progress onto teaching (0-19), working with young people in youth services/youth work, work in the Education and Childcare sector or with children and young people with SEN and other 0-19 years related professions.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Education Studies: You’ll learn about education and the issues surrounding access, as well as the theory behind how people learn with a focus on the sociological and political perspectives.

Childhood Studies: Having an in-depth understanding of child development and the influences on such is a necessity of a practitioner. Everything from physical development to theoretical perspectives on how children and young people learn will be covered.

Gender, Sexuality and Society: Focuses on society, gender roles, the challenge of stereotyping and the role of the family, including how the structure of families has changed.

Professional Health Care Professions: You will explore the importance of safeguarding, communication skills and reflective practice, all essential aspects for any career with children, young people and their families.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a blend of essays, evidence based portfolios, assignments, examinations and presentations.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

The course gives you direct access to Higher Education and a route into teaching (0-19) or a Higher Education course related to children and young people’s services.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You are required to undertake a minimum of 40 hours compulsory work experience which is a reflection of your prospective profession. DBS checks are compulsory, which can be either obtained from the placement area or from Preston’s College. There are opportunities for industry related trips.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Five GCSEs or equivalent Grade C, including Maths and English. For a Teaching pathway a GCSE grade C or above in Science is desirable. You will also need to attend an interview. If you do not have any of these qualifications please get in touch. GCSE Maths and English are available at the College FREE of charge for those without a grade C. There is also a Level 2 and 3 in Early Years Education available.
